*sigh*

I'm on a Telkom adsl account, and I have recently noticed that, during the week, roughly between the hours of 12:00 and 17:00, my IRC connection lags right out constantly. I have no idea why, but it is fine on weekends, it is only during the week that it causes trouble, and only during those hours. Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm using irssi, but the same problem occurs with mIRC as well :(

Any thoughts?

What server? You can expect lag with shaped accounts during office hours to International servers, but not local. I don't lag at all on local irc servers. But depending on the irc network they may have servers with ports 80/21/etc open which might be worth trying...

I'm on an international server. I realise shaping may have something to do with it. But being shaped so badly I can't actually remain connected to an international text-based service? That is just ridiculous :(

I'm currently connected to irc.foonetic.net, although it seems to do this on all international servers. I'm trying lagnet now.

Well, local irc servers seem fine.

I cannot actually believe port-shaping has gotten this bad.

I am mortified.

I'm having similar problems at the moment where I get timed out constantly on the Rizon IRC network. If there's little to no activity in the channels I'm on, I'm guaranteed to time out within 5 minutes. I've tried all their servers across the globe, US, Europe, Asia, but the same thing happens.
I've done traceroutes to all of them and everything seems fine latency and hop wise.

I'm using mibbit as a temporary fix and haven't experienced any lag or disconnect time outs.

There is definitely a problem IRC'ing on international servers with shaped saix accounts during the day... I get this problem too. Only solutions are to either use an unshaped (or non-saix) account, set up a bnc (irc proxy) locally, or perhaps try other ports which may be open on the server.
I must agree that it's pathetic that we can't even use IRC (which is text-based and very low on bandwidth requirements (it can run stable on a 56k connection easily)) on our ADSL lines with shaped telkom-internet accounts. Almost as bad as the 512k-per-session limiting on http traffic currently in effect on their squid-cache network

i have got myself a 3 gig axxess account mainly just for IRC and when my current/ main ISP fails me, (everyday at 2pm.) and am gonna drop my current and go with them for a month and see how they handle gaming. i would gladly pay 100 rand more for quality than have crap quantity.
