Been staying in Aus for a month now.
1 Month before I left someone broke into my house and stole everything including passports and car - insurance refuses to pay.
Still get e-mail updates everyday from the old security company. For the last 3 months, every day a car has been stolen or a house broken into in the suburb I stayed and the next suburb over - every day!
One kid got shot for shouting to his parents that people were trying to break in when he came home and is in hospital fighting for his life. I would say they could have just scared him off or tied him up, but in the real world these shouldn't even be alternatives - it shouldn't be happening! I'm no longer willing to take that chance, next time it could be me or someone I love.
Things are *** expensive here but I go for a run after dark or take the dog for a walk in the park at 11pm and I don't feel scared, paranoid or endangered at any time. I still have my SA tendencies like carrying my stuff with me whenever I leave my work desk or keeping my hands in my pockets to protect my cell phone and wallet but this just gives me a one up over everyone here.
I will miss SA as it is a beautiful country with an awesome mix of culture, lifestyle and affordability but anyone who cannot look back over the last 20 years and see that everything is slowly sliding into the toilet is ignorant. If you need to lie to yourself because you cannot get out then do it, I feel for you. You can keep running from what the ANC is doing but eventually they will get hold of the little corners of the country where the last few rational people manage to get to and **** that up too, and then you will be sorry.
It was an expensive process getting out but not one day has gone by that I have regretted my choice.
