Is it worth getting a BB?

I think vodacom is throttling my BIS coz I tried another voda sim with BIS and it flys so my phone got no issues

Just out of interest, with that R59 uncapped, how much data do you guys do per month with it?

Last time I was monitoring, I was doing about 300MB per month. Of course, that's fairly compressed by the BlackBerry back-end, so in real terms, based on their stated average compression ratios, that's probably around 750MB, for browsing, email, Twitter, Facebook, and assorted apps.

Jees thats a lot of browsing on a cell phone. Personally, would rather do it on my PC. But if that's true, I doubt I can match 300mb a month on my Android. Still, with the new smart contracts from vodacom, I get a motorola razr, some minutes (lasts me the month, not sure how many) and 150mb of data. Seems to be working for me... Final cost? R230 pm.

I spend two hours a day in slow traffic, so I do a lot of mobile browsing. And multiple email accounts, Twitter, FB, etc. etc. It adds up.

Its one thing calling some one on your phone (I think thats fine) but browsing and driving? You need to look where you're going man :wtf: I almost crashed my car typing a quick text, last time I ever do that.

See we approach this differently. I see it as R59 unlimited browsing. Its not an 'uncapped' product. Its not meant to be. Its on device browsing. Not tether and rape the data. Its the view that the flat rate entitles you to an uncapped service that has crippled other user's experience. Crappy bis started at vodacom and now Mtn has reworked their t&c's as well as a result of the view viewing bis as uncapped.

I don't really use my BB for browsing. We have a lot of roadworks at the moment so I spend a lot of time waiting, then I read the RSS feeds and browse when something interests me.

Don't even try tethering, because you're going to get whacked for OOB data.

I get all my emails, and there are tons, on my BB - not that I ever read them there, but it is handy.

I am pretty sure BB is going to come back with something that can compete with the competitors - they'd have to be living under a rock not to. I am not writing them off just yet, not am I changing my phone just because it is close to being out of contract - it works, that's all I am worried about.

It did pee me off the other day when I tried to retrieve the number of an unknown contact that called me and it was nowhere to be found - seems BB only stores calls from your contacts, selectively.

While stationary. :) I spend a lot of time like that at rush hour.

I would suggest you wait till the end of Jan for the new BB phones to be launched. They will be way better than the current phones. I will also stay away from the curve 8520. I would also suggest you play around with your friend's phones to see which you will prefer.

Full disclosure, I currently use a BlackBerry 9700 and will be getting one of the new BlackBerry 10 phones

i have the 8520. not to shabby. not used for extensive browsing though.

Game has Cell C BB including social plan with 30 mins airtime. 30mb and 30 sms and BB 9300 for R99 per month.
Calls for R99c per min out of bundle.

The new 9320 isn't a bad option either. Nice entry level to replace 8520 and 9300.

I have a 9300 curve bridged to my playbook , so while i have an ancient phone, having unlimted browsing on the tablet and upgrade to BB10 when it comes out is going to be amazing, i probably would of switched to something else if there were any other decent physical key phones out there -.-

Reason why I'm happy with my BB and cannot wait for BB10 - my upgrade is due in 4 mths time.

I work for a leading WASP and BB is still King in SA.

My curve 9300 has been in for repairs countless times for the following reasons:
Trackpad
usb port
Sim Reader
keypad

The only reason bb took off in this country is because of our rubbish data prices and lack of unlimited texting which was available in first world countries with decent mobile operators. My ex had two blackberrys. The trackpad packed in on her 9300 and her 9320 would get slow.

Having spent several hours trying to help a friend export his contacts and messages from his blackberry to his new Samsung Galaxy, I have to say that Blackberry's are utter crap and their software is utterly useless. Why does it have to take so much time and effort to do something that should be natively supported? Why do I have to go and find third party apps and tools to do something so simple? Seriously, anybody who raves about these toy phones is an idiot.

Several hours? I have just bought a Samsung Galaxy and did this in all of 10 mins:

- Updated my BB contacts on my Laptop Windows 7
- Created a file to import contacts into my Google / Gmail account
- Contacts auto-sync with my phone.

Uhm...it is natively supported...I did it within a few minutes...quite simple really...
But I do understand your frustration when you try something but can't seem to get it right...
