IS News Server down?

Keep talking about the news servers, that'll help the speeds.

More people who use it = more network congestion ;)

Thing is you'd have to download what others have. The magic used to be downloading whatever you liked, at full speed, cached or uncached. If there's something you really want, you have to sit through agony at 15kB/s. And caching isn't guaranteed, even though you get better speeds, if the network is congested then speeds will suffer.

You can't really blame IS, they only have a certain capacity. Increasing capacity costs $$$, especially because they have to directly deal with Telkom (via IPC). 10000 users buying 30GB local accounts isn't going to come close to covering the cost, but it will clog up the network.

So yeah keep promoting it, just remember that it might seem like a good deed but it will affect the speeds of all the current users. I guess it's too late now, this thread already has 50 000+ views. No amount of complaining is going to help, the news server is low on IS's priority list.

...they should start charging for it and make it better :)

Not here. I have given up on the whole thing.

It seems what Highflyer says is correct. Too much talk of it has lead to everyone jumping onboard and clogging it up. IS don't really have it as a priority so it will not get any better any time soon.

IS should rather worry about the fact that their service has been just short of laughable all month and focus on fixing that first.

I also agree what Highflyer said, but it's to late now. Maybe six months ago when things was still a bit okay. But ATM talking about it or ignoring it won't make things better.

news groups

mmm, is it just me or is IS now restricting news groups. I can download fine off a common news group like say a.b.tv, but anything else like a.b.haxxor.warez i cant.

Its been like this all weekend.

Uhm, this isn't the first time we've spoken about it. Highflyer in particular said many times in the past that this will happen. It's not us ignoring it, it's others ignoring him.

Uhm, well that's besides the point now. It has been talked about and everyone with a local account knows about it. The "secret" is out and all.
We all suffer at 15kb/s. If you have something you don't want people to know, keep your mouth shut. Like I said before moaning about it NOW won't make things better.

Thats not correct - I know quite a few people who dont use the news servers and even more that dont even know about it.

It's a popular misconception that everyone is as well informed as MyADLS members. ;)

Okay maybe I should have stated it like this - 9/10 that knows about it went and bought a local account to use the local news server.

I think what everyone is saying, is that it has become a topic on myadsl nearly everyone knows about. Unless it has been disgussed elsewhere that could have caused a fesible result in the speeds that dropped down to 15kb/s on uncached stuff.

The reality is that there is still plenty of room for further degradation. Every other day there seems to be someone joining the forum just to find out how to use the servers.
