yea thats what im using at the moment the $15 uncapped from newshosting. Maxes out my line 24/7, quite shocking as normally during business hours my speed drops like a rock. But i dont get it, surely if im able to get those speed from an international host, through IS international, why cant there local news server perform as well? It would save IS on international as im pretty sure everyone is downloading mostly the same stuff so we would just be taking from the local cache?

Remember, their local news server draws from an international usenet host and therefore uses their international bandwidth. With the current restrictions that they have implemented on their news server, their international bandwidth is no longer flatlined by 4mb people raping the news server and you therefore get full speed from your international threads. This will not last if ppl start using your method :) Like you say it makes sense for them to prefer you to go through them as it will cache the download from the first request and subsequent hits to those posts will be "free" for IS in that it only uses local bandwidth. I think what happened is with the sudden spike in popularity due to the public broadcasting of its effectiveness, they got completely over subscribed and just failed miserably at providing their service. In fact i wouldnt be surprised if their caching of content locally only started occuring effectively after the 4mb upgrade. What they should do is cache more locally, and charge a nominal fee in line with int service providers for the service. Most of what i download is not cached at all and i am forced to use international through newshosting if i want decent speeds.

But then if you think of it, the 4mbit guys will be downloading anything and everything thus the 512's, 384's will most probably find that all they wish to download is cached locally. I think we would get good speeds off the IS news server is the speed per a connection were higher / if you could make more connections but lately in the last few days i have not even managed to get higher than 20kb/s off 8connections... And to me there does not seem to be a difference in local cached to international uncached speeds :(

Local caching is definately occuring. I see spikes sometimes in popular downloads of up to 200K. I tested it with a popular download yesterday and instead of hopping straight on, i waited a while and some of the rars were definately from a local source judging by the speed jumps. But like you said, a couple of terabytes caching will sort out most of the popular stuff. There will still be a lot of other downloads that will be unique though....specially at 4mb speeds! Its like telling a starving man to stop at 2 crackers and a glass of water at an all you can eat buffet! I think the SA ppl are so sick and tired of the restrictions we have had in the past that they just download for the sake of downloading...... tell me it doesnt give you a warm fuzzy feeling to see that download sitting at 400K+ constantly :)

hehehe *looks at his current download queue*

well i do say 33gigs is a bit overboard, i mean at around 10gigs i had what i wanted but then, its a once off thing. Its not like i can decide tomorrow ooo i want this now but i will be capped. So at the moment its, grab as much as you possibly can.

Watching it at 400k+ is also a bonus. Especially when you keep on adding and the time left changes by minutes not HOURS. ;)

Exactly why advertising your speeds is a bad idea! Lol. A coupla hundred ppl try this and is international speeds will STOP. I know i tend to download more than i need to. Its like we are trying to make up for all the years of unnecessary bandwidth oppression! lol

how to connect?

Hi Guys

How does one actually connect to the IS News Server? What is the address? Do you need to have an IS account before you can do so?

I currently have a SAIX account and was wondering what sort of content might be available on the IS News Server before I buy a "local only" only account.

Anyway I can check it out without an IS account? And if so, where/how?

the newsserver detects that ur on the IS network and connects u automatically

go to newzleech.com and search for whatever ur looking for, if its on there then its probably on the IS news server. but read about the problems the server is having at the moment before u get an acc, u might juz be wastin ur time

Ja, seems like 40kb/s is here to stay! IS is doing some moving this weekend so lets hope it will do something to the servers... ;)

Because the likes of newshosting and easynews are professionals where as it seems at times as if IS is the epitome of amateur hour.

damnit, i juz discovered the joy that is converting avi's to dvd. the happiness that fills my heart when i realise that the process takes upwards of an our. did i juz waste my 400-odd bucks on a dvd writer? add to that 150 bucks for a 50 pack dvd+r spindle... 5 cases of hunters dry, down the drain :(

Wait until you experience the joys of ripping a dual layer DVD and converting it to divx/xvid/mpeg4. Will make your one hour seem like one minute.
