Is pc falling behind

Ubisoft messed up with SC4, just like Ion Strom did with Invisible War. What does that have to do with the platform? How is a bad game an indication of the platform as a whole?
NFS Carbon is crap on PS2, does that mean PS2 is crap as a whole?
SC4 doesn't work on GF8? Yes I think it does. It's a crap game on any gfx card, but Ubisoft is not a representation of the platform.

The original thread title asks "Is pc falling behind?" It does not qualify this question at all. So we have to examine in which fields this would be, if it's new or if there's anything to debate at all.

As far as graphical prowess goes, the PC isn't falling behind, never has and won't in the foreseeable future. As far as number of titles go, consoles has always had more (NES days and onwards)
As a pick up and play item, the console has always been superior, because that's all it does. Gaming on the PC is only one of the things a PC can do so that argument is not highlighting anything new and for the most part is meaningless in this context.

So in all 4 pages, someone has yet to say exactly how the PC is falling behind and make a valid argument, :(

It seems that in the future SC4 type games will become the norm. What I was trying to say is that if you manage to get your uber P.C to actually perform you still have to rely on the game coding being up to scratch.

Your right. Strictly performance wise P.C's are not falling behind.

Keep it up ShockG. I need all the help I can get if I'm to resist the dark side.

Also, NVIDIA's 8800 cards were excluded from tests due to rendering errors during gameplay. While the game did run on our 8800, the Sam Fisher model was warped and twisted into a very strange shape making gameplay pretty much impossible

You are making a lot of sense and even though others and myself have said some of the things you have just said above (the key differences between consoles = gaming and PC's = all, for instance)

Well, I for one, must say thanks for your posts. You appear to know what you are talking about and in your posts you are making it very clear with factual evidence that it isn't the case. So, I for one am not too concerned, wasn't even in the least.

Thanks none the less. :)

Yes but I'm tired of getting games and having to then wait for days or weeks for patches. I now wait for weeks after games are released so there can be patches available before I buy them. Not a huge problem but it does add to list of issues to sort out just to play the game.

It's just geeting a bit much nowadays. :(

The thread title is "Is PC falling behind" it's been posted in the Gaming section. Do I believe PCs are falling behind in the gaming sector? Yes, but its been in the same decline since the days of the Sega Megadrive etc. The console market has a much wider variety of games than the PC market does mostly due to the console's primary function being just that...games. The reason I game on a PC rather than a console is since the mid 90s I've been attending LANs, which up to now would be quite anti-social if you rocked up with a PS2 and played games by yourself.

As far as gaming is concerned, the console is moving into the PC territory at a rapid rate. The graphics are as good as the majority of graphic cards out there (bar the new expensive bad boys) and from what I've read, networking a Xbox360 is piss. But these are all just elements of entertainment, you still can't write an assignment, author a dvd (of home videos ofcourse) or sort out your budget a spreadsheet - these are still everyday functions which are 'exclusive' to the PC market.

I'm waiting for next year to see what happens with AMD and ATI. The range on the G80 cards and what the PS3 is gonna cost. The PS3 is very tempting as it will be able to run Linux so I can still browse the net and play UT07 with a mouse and keyboard. I think with UT07 getting support for the mouse and keyboard combination more games will follow. Maybe a good MMORPG and a good hack&slash RPG.

Guys i dont know maby its just me but it seems like pc graphics are very bad when compared to xbox360 and when is dx10 coming out?

nvidia lunched there first dx10card geforce 8800, and if xbox 360 would have the same similarities etc as pc with keyboard and mouse etc id consider one rather then to upgrade to a new pc again... ofcourse it must have lan etc that stuff

Okay 8800 is expensive, but that has a lot to do with the chip itself.

Next month nVIDIA is releasing 65nm products including 8800GTS and 8800GTX replacements. Those gfx cards will be much much cheaper than the current price of 8800s. The reason the 8800 is so expensive is because the G80 is the biggest chip in gate density per mm to ever exist in the world. That directly translates into getting fewer chips per 300mm wafer than you would if the chip was much smaller. G80 is a 90nm part, moving to 80nm would give a 10~15% saving on production cost, but moving to a full node (65nm) which is much easier to optimize than half process (80nm) would give a 40~60% saving, which means the end user could end up paying 50% less for the same chip.
i.e MSRP for 8800GTX = $599

That would change to $399~$499 for the same graphics power.
Now if you look at the pricing high end parts from Nvidia have always been $499 since 1999 with GeForce1 introduction. Today however, the same $499 gets you over 50X the graphics power.
Compared this with consoles which have grown increasingly more expensive since their incarnation. :/
TSMC whose nVidia's primary foundry will be moving to 45nm production in Q4 2007, now imagine what that means again. November 2007, you'll have 8800GTX power for R1700 ~ R2,000 locally and even less in the US at $199.
So price can't be used as an excuse at that point. ;)

With DX10, development for PC is much easier and consequently cheaper than it has ever been before in terms of technical wizardry required to achieve the same effect that would have cost you a fortune under DX9.

PC will survive right next to Console. I for one am building an HTPC that will sit next to XBOX and also play games :)

PC will always survive. But the cost is simply too prohibitive to get a slight game visual quality difference from the X360 IMO.

16xAA or whatever else demands quite a hight price. Ouch.

man if i wanted to see GT this GS that 8800 this 7800 that "you a geek" dx10 this under dx9 that Geforce this....i would of gone and looked at the hardware forum or maybe even gone to Nvidia website.

Just thought you might be off cause you are not liking what you are reading ... not having answers for the facts from ShockG
So, it appears that you are throwing your toys a bit and sulking it seems :D

BTW> there is a thread in off-topic where you can post photos of yourself :p
