Is SA music dying?

Yeaaars ago I developed a mental block regarding ANY afrikaans music - to me it will always be idiotic lyrics with the simplest rhyming and no 'image' beyond the blatantly obvious - A.K.A. Ska-rumba or whatever it was called

I also feel the need to clarify.:) JP was just an example of "something else"(when in one of those moods). I'm a Theuns, Juanita {and Static-X, Godsmack (non-SA)} kind of person. Parletones (and Coldplay types) don't feature in my list.

It's true that it's not just SA musicians who are guilty of this, but since the thread relates to SA music only... ;)

Personally the prevalence of crap just puts me off trying anything South African that I don't know. To me, it seems the chances are just so much greater that it will suck.

Anyway, it's another one of those "Live and let live" type of situations - don't make me listen to your crap Afrikaans doef-doef etc and I won't tell you repeatedly how much it sucks. :)

I wonder how long before zef becomes the "next great thing". So far we've got Die Antwoord and Jack Parow cashing in, that I know of. Won't be long before more of those start crawling out of the woodwork.

Good thing I don't sing. I'm ripping the wrong rhymes today.:) Juanita was not the best example, but every good collection need a view misses between all your hits to remind you why you like it so much.

hehe, just that "THAT" song is her biggest "hit" [right?], so i don't even want to know what her misses sound like...
 
I think SA music is great. Kurt Darren is just sad, and is also only barely music. No offence Kurt but I am comparing you to the Nude Girls or the Parlotones, Freshly Ground etc.
 
I don't feel SA music is dying as much as it is lacking diversity. If you like the main types of SA music (e.g. Afrikaans-pop, house/kwaito) then there's a lot to choose from -- I just feel some generes are undeveloped in SA.
One that stands out for me is post-hardcore and metalcore. I just can't find equivalents to The Used, Alexisonfire, August Burns Red, Protest The Hero, etc. in SA music.
 
Bear in mind that although now based in America, Dave Matthews is from SA as well!

The Doors. Amazing. It confirms my suspicion. Many of the Doors old school (Marshall St) and even early Edenvale crowd feel the exact same way. And I was no excption. Until I was banned and went a few months without any metal DJing at all and someone asked me the same question: Why? What'd he do? and I realised those days were long gone and while his antics may have been somewhat pretentious at the time, at least he was giving the music airplay on the radio.

And well done on mentioning the Narrow. Now, who remembers Stingray?
 
There's a lot of great SA bands out there. Watch MK on DSTV, they're doing a lot to promote local music.

they promote "certain" SA music, [mostly k.k bands if you ask me].

They lost all credibility when they started playing Kurt Darren, Nicholas Louw, and all the other crap you hear on 5fm and Jacaranda.

I will admit, they were awesome when they were still MK89. but since the "name" change, they suck...

There are awesome types of music and then there's the **** Kurt Darren and Alkoholis Louw spew out, the bekkie bokkie chocolates crap. As with every language, the pop is ****ty but then you also get the good stuff.

Need I remind you what language Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga or Jessica Black sing in? (Clue : not afrikaans)
