Is SA music dying?

The words of this popular song from Kurt Darren could just as well have been written about the sharp decline in Afrikaans CD sales over the last while.

Large music stores have been sending large quantities of CDs back to record companies because they do not sell. Artists believe it's because the recession isn't over - and that the public has become poorer. But Robert Ferns, Musica's head of sales, says it's especially due to bad songs appearing on CDs that sales have declined.

Ferns unequivocally states that a lack of creativity causes people to not buy CDs. The assumption has always been that the illegal sale of pirated CDs damages the entertainment industry. But according to Ferns "the Afrikaans buyer is very loyal to his artists and will not easily buy a CD on the street".

Musica has returned thousands of CDs over the last while, including those of even Kurt Darren, because it is only gathering dust on the shelves. Ferns says that although they have always returned CDs in the past, this is the first time they have to return so many.

Manager Louis van Wyk admits that the poor sales of Dozi's album Voel So Reg has to do with weak songs. "You can't be a number one artist for very long. As times change, you have to constantly adapt your creativity to produce quality music."

Music expert Barry Pretorius says some artists underestimate the public. "To translate foreign tunes into Afrikaans with meaningless lyrics show that you are a replica of someone else. This is currently happening with many artists."

Kurt Darren disagrees, but admits that his CD Oos Wes, Tuis Bes sold badly. "It's true that a hit sells your CD. Like my Kaptein CD that sold 190 000 versus my Oos Wes, Tuis Bes CD that sold 65 000. People have become poorer. "

yeah, thats also why i say "afrikaans" . I also believe there are plenty of brilliant artist [across all genres].

In fact, i believe that the quality of our rock and metal bands can compete with any band worldwide, even though most of them aren't "mainstream"

I'm Afrikaans and must agree with you that "Afrikaans - Pop" music has gone stale of late. Even the new names entering the market are all copies of older bands. There is a defenite need for some revitalisation.

However, SA music generally is not dying - you only need to listen to Tuks FM for a short while to come to the conclusion that SA music generally is alive and thriving.

They are not awful, you just dont like them. There is a difference. Because they are bloody good, watch them live and you can tell just how good
I dont like prime circle, doesnt mean they are not a good band, just that I dont like their style etc

Thats a bit harsh..there is still some good stuff happening. Although, alternatively, it does seem to have dropped a bit.
Gotta say, people like Barney simon (i hate him) did do some good stuff for our music way back

Most SA music is utter crap. You say South African music and I think Johnny Cleg and the Parlatones. VOMIT!! Other than the stuff coming from those making electro, hip hop/rap and kwaito, most of it is RUBBISH. When it comes to bands and signers.. SA music is CRAAAAAP!

We do however have some really talented people making less popular forms of music. A heard a set a while back by Fletcher.. I think the set aired on a BBC radio station and consisted entirely of tracks produced by South Africans... the entire set was tight...

ok, i do like Metal [although, that's like saying "i like food", there is so many types of metal]. but i'm not aware of any really stand out local bands... will see what i can dig up.

And the irony is that it is one of the most popular "rock" bands. More pop in my opinion.

Regarding the Rock genre. Currently, Aking is a great band to listen to. Afrikaan alternative is also making strong inroads via Heuwels Fantasties etc.

So, the music industry isn't dying, but there is definitely shift to other music.

So, Kaptein span die seile, Afrikaans crap musiek is gaan tot sy einde (sing it)

I'm not that big on South African music, although a few do stand out, some that I would definitely listen to, and others that, although it's not my kind of thing, I recognise their talent, and they are doing what they are trying to do VERY well.

As for South Africans competing on the international stage, with an international sound, there just aren't really any that stand out to me.

I'm going for more of a pop-vibe, but I think these groups stand out and I like them so much, it's like music to my ears:

Aking ?? (how has everyone over looked this... They amazing, and live, even better!)
Goldfish (Ok, they pop and electro-jazz, which is not everyones cup of tea... but I dig them, their live performance is truly amazing)

Jax Panik.
Now, Jax Panik is weird. They very pop, but not SA pop, they have an international Sound, good live performance, and at their current rate, I can see them penetrating the international market very well. They have a 3Oh!3 sort of vibe, which is cool if you into more pop music.

I despise them, I ran out of a live concert while they were playing. However, they seem to 'entertain' a lot of people, which is alright I guess.

Those are the ones that just popped into my mind now, so feel free to light a fire and burn me with it if you don't agree .

Why? What'd he do to you? He is on Jacaranda FM now - best 3 hours of my day (13 to 16h00) and Saturdays (12h00 to 14h00). Of course, the railroading that Benji Moodie sucks. Both of these individuals did - and continue to do - really good stuff for ZAROCK.
