IS Shaping traffic/ Network Problems

What are the alternatives for uncapped ADSL with no shaping and what prices are we looking at ? Been with openweb uncapped for 6 months now and the service has been very very good but if this goes on i'm leaving them. Rather pay R1000 for uncapped 192k line with no shaping cause this is what is happening at the moment except i get shapped as well and i'm suppose to be on 4 mbit line.

Moonie (Very pissed off)

They will loose most of their ADSL customers if this is going to be a permanent thing. SAIX has far better service in all regards except local bandwith price.

1) I.S intl stability has to be fixed ...stability not acceptable..and don't blame all on telkom...i've got a verizon acc along with my telkomsa one and I.S wins hands down as the most unstable/inconsistent TIER 1 provider.

2) p2p & news has to be cleared up...set a working standard ..keep to it or go home.

NOT value for money .

*sigh* /me sense a huge # of account terminations soon.

I'm with you on that one....if it's truly the case I wont be renewing my contract with IS the end of this month!

It's been a constant struggle this month with SLOW speeds on torrents and news server.

:(

Hey Friends

I am hoping this problem will be solved by latest Friday.

I am still in constant contact with IS regarding this.

And yes, I totally understand the frustration this has caused! I am really sorry!

Thx Mr Beep - If i understand you correctly, it is only a fault on IS side, and NOT new shaping policy?

Yes, it is a fault that is being worked on.

IS does shape. It is not a secret, or confidential information. However, their policies arent harsh at all. Thus, this problem is a fault, and only temporary.

I must however thank users for their patience whilst this matter is resolved.

thx for the info and your effort MrBeep - it's much appreciated!!

I'm glad to hear that it is a fault, which shoud be resolved soon since it is now a couple of day's allready. Switched two Torrents from an IS account to SAIX and instead of 3 Weeks eta it is running at full speed eta 3hrs. But thanx that people are getting the info.

Can't help feeling sceptical about a "fault" that starts on a Monday and ends on a Friday.

If there is a fault in their shaping, why not just turn off the packet sniffer software until they've ironed out the problem. Turn it back on when the problem is fixed. That would at least show good faith.

The really stupid thing is that I'm now using far more international bandwidth than I would normally use because this "fault" has slowed local downloading to a trickle.

More from IS

Hi.
The shaping that we do on the P2P traffic has always been in place. Bear in mind this is not for all ADSL services, but more for the capped services. We have recently updated some of the code, and it seems to be shaping traffic in a way that users are not happy with ... hence all of the discussions.

We are aware, and the guys are looking at the best way to manage the traffic, with no management of the traffic other services would also be unacceptable. The engineers are measuring, and making sure that the responses you are currently getting will be improved, and that traffic is successfully managed, not just simply limited.

Hope that answers it a bit more.

Hmmm, eish

Hey Mr. Beep! Thx for all the feedback, does help to understand the whole situation a bit better! Just wondering, If they updated the "some" of their code, why does it take a week to figure out where the problem is in the code! And why don't they first run tests on modified code to make sure the code is doing what its supposed to, before they implement it on the whole system? Seems kinda stupid to implement something you haven't properly tested.Ok...... maybe they did test it, but surely not under the same conditions, other wise it would work wouldn't it?!....

Hi.
As far as I know, it was tested, and is actually working, better than the old code, problem is it seems to be working "too well", and we need to tweek it to make all users happy. That's about all I know about it in terms of the fact that it's not so much broken as needing to be set up correctly/adjusted.

Thx AntIS, well this does make sense! Its just bad that the tweaking is sorta being done on a trail and error basis! Because it can take a lot of time to set it up properly so that everybody stays happy! :)

I have just purchased (a day ago) an additional 20GB (local) at Openweb. This is not carried over at the end of the month if it does not get used, so what if this problem were to persist and I was unable to use up the 20GB I have purchased due to this problem? Who is responsible then? Would I be refunded? Just another example of how the consumer in this country is the last to be considered (and respected - seeing as it is us who make all this business for the ISPs and Telkom possible). 1 to 5kb downloads are unacceptable for even the entry level DSL accounts - I was getting those speeds, years ago when I was still on dial-up.

At least you are getting download speed, i'm averaging 0.0kb/s. sweet don't you think?! Mine is worse than dial-up.At least they are very aware of the problem.Any way hope they get it sorted today!

Why shape P2P on local traffic?

Let's ask ourselves a question here:
What are local only ADSL accounts used for?

1. P2P downloading,
2. P2P downloading, and guess what
3. more P2P downloading

Certainly there is very little browsing, e-mail, and http downloads etc, because there simply is nothing or very little to browse or download via http.

So, if they are going to be limiting P2P traffic, why don't they just rename the service to "10KB/s If You're Lucky Local Only"? Browsing or sending mail should still be acceptable. At least you won't be lying to your customers about the service you provide.

Well, I have 5 or so simultaneous downloads running - 4 of them are usually on 0.0Kbps and maybe one is at 2Kbps (average).

I want to make a suggestion to the whole of SA out there - I am sick to death of Telkom (as are we all), it's bad service and high prices - why don't we let them feel the power of their customers. How about we show them who are in charge - what if every residential user boycotts Telkom for one month? We all need to stand together for this to work. It is our right to protest - we don't have to go to extremes like burning down their towers (as suggested much earlier in this forum). Here is what I propose - let's not pay our Telkom accounts at the end of a certain month (call it March or April) - there is no way that they can disconnect about millions of people - it would cause too much havoc, now can you imagine what it would do to their cash flow? Let's say an average spend per home user is about R150 (I know it's more, but lets be conservative). 5 million people is less than one eighth of the population of SA - 5 million people x R150 = 750 Million Rand that Telkom will not receive for a month. I don't think it will dent their bloated coffers, but it might help to display our dissatisfaction with their service and prices. Let me know what you all think.

I've also switched to my Telkom account till this issue is resolved.

*sigh* There goes my cap! lol!

All the information regarding this issue that I've been hearing from all over is just irratating me, I just want to know the facts and Thanks go out to all who constantly keeping us updated regarding this issue.

That's why they call it a "best effort" service.
