Telkom's line speeds of 384, 1024 (formerly 512) and 4096 have always been called "Fast", "Faster" and "Fastest", right?

So I get Telkom's little "Connect SA" pamphlet in the envelope with my 'phone bill this month and there's a whole blurb in it about their 3 month free ADSL trial called "Get Fast Internet". We all know about that, right.

Under "Important things to know about the Fast Internet Offer" is the following:

  • The Product on trial is Fast Internet (1024kbps ADSL access with 5 GB of blended data and 20 GB local data) for 3 months.

So suddenly "Fast" is 1024 kbps.

Can I take this to mean the old "Fast" - 384 - will soon fall away? Telkom?

lol

i do not see them upgrading the 384k service without at least raising the price, they will milk it

Here's a straw. Would you like to grasp it?

lol. I upgraded to 1024 some time ago.

I was simply wondering if there was any significance in the wording in the pamphlet. After all, their 5 Gb for DoBroadband 1 and 10 Gb for DoBroadband 2 customers July / August Promotion ends on Wednesday. I know many people were unaware of the extra gigs they got for July and August, but were just happy not to be capped when they'd gone over their normal limit. They'll all be getting a big disappointment wake-up soon if / when they're dropped back to their old caps. Or will they be?

Telkom as usual are saying nothing. But this pamphlet must have been printed some time ago. I reckon something's in the pipeline, just don't know what.

Only in your wildest wet dream will Telkom drop 384k :D You guys are stuck with it for now, sorry.

I downgraded my 4MB line to a 384kbps line but I sync at 1MB.
I pay the 384 price :D
So I'll grab a straw as well

So, what they going to call 384 then? Slow/Medium?

"Fast" is false advertising as it is...

Yep. Probably just rebranding. Maybe they'll be honest and they'll call 384 Crushingly, Unbearably Slow, 1024 Slow and 10240 Meh.

You see, doubters? :)

I know of an old couple who ticked the wrong box on their ADSL application form and got a 4 meg line when they only wanted 384. They called Telkom, who said "Sure, no prob, we'll change it" They've been paying for 384 for 2 years and every time I visit them I check their line speed - they're still on 4 meg, and still only getting billed for 384. Pity they only have a 384 uncapped account from Mweb. At least it runs at every kb of it's 384. Sigh, what a waste...

Flip, i highly doubt that.
Too bad as IMO it should be 1Mb Fast, 4Mb Faster, 10Mb+ Fastest.

Actually I think they need 4 speed classes.

384, 1MB, 4MB, 10Mb and all paying different prices.

384k is too slow for the time we live in. Drop it and increase all 4096k to at least 10 mb with 1024 entry speed.

Give that man a bottle of Bells! :D

I'd pay tiny bit extra to go from 384K to 1024k, but then would need say 15Gb cap as well
