Is there any way to increase Flash Player buffering?

Does anyone know whether, or how, it is possible to increase Flash Player (or specifically the BBC's iPlayer) buffering? I download a lot of streaming audio from the BBC sites, and because I have a poor connection the downloads occasionally stop while the buffer catches up.

Right-clicking in the BBC's iPlayer apparently allows you to increase the storage, but this doesn't seem to achieve anything and the storage total stays on a few kB. Neither does pausing at the start to allow the buffer to fill before actually launching and recording the programme. We're not talking vast amounts of incoming data here -- an entire half-hour streamed audio programme is generally no more than about 15MB in total, so in theory it should surely be possible to buffer most of this before actually playing/recording the programme?

Any ideas?

I do indeed download the BBC podcasts, but there are many programs available as streaming audio which are not packaged as pods, so must be listened to or recorded live. Hence my problem! Oh, and World Service podcasts are totally eclipsed by those available from the domestic BBC Radio 4 in terms of entertainment and interest value! (IMHO)
