Is this normal?

Was a terrible idea converting it in the first place to fix the original problem.

But I agree sounds like the old diff is still in there and doesn't match the new gearbox. Could also be that the "new" gearbox was already buggered before going in this the other dramas.

R4500 is way too little money for a job like this.

That's what I thought as well... But I can feel that the car is not 100%, there is just to much wrong with it.

Thank You! Can anyone reccomend a place in CPT?

Frank's Motors, Queenspark Road, Salt River (Frank Dreyer). You won't get much response from him this time of year, but he is a good mechanic with years of experience

So I had a look at the diff, is there a special for automatic or is there one for manual as well?

Could it be the air flow meter causing it? As the car idles between 1 and 2 rpm...

They auto and manual cars will have different diffs... the ratio's inside the diffs will be different due to the different gearing ratios in the gearbox.

Absolutely not! ;) :p

BTW - if it was only able to do 1 or 2 rpm it would be dead...:D

FYI - add 000 to each number on the rev counter....;)

Whatever you do just make sure that you go to a reputable place to get your car sorted, because it would be incredibly easy to con you.
Someone might even be able to persuade you to replace your automatic gearbox with a manual.

Did you not have a thread on here a while back about buying this car and being advised not to do it?

That was a newer E46

Newer E46 or not - it is a major undertaking swapping from Auto to Manual, and far simpler to stick with auto, as you now appear to be finding out.

Yes I see what you mean now... So where do I find a manual diff? Will the scrapyards have it in CPT?

OP give me the last 7 digits of your VIN number and ill try find diff part numbers for auto and manual.

OP, go to www.bmwfanatics.co.za and ask the CPT guys for help.

going to BMW will cost you a packet. Their diagnostics alone will be about R1000.

the vibration at high speed could be anything even some missing bolts from the crooked mechanic's work.

That's only half the problem - the car is revving at about 2000 revs more than it should at 120. We are looking at a gear ratio/diff problem here.

True but he needs a former/current BMW technician to check it out without paying too much. Paying R4000 for a box replacement is a scary thought especially on a bmw.

and it will probably only happen in January so I'd drive the car into the mechanics reception area without slowing down!
