Is your Disney+ broken ??

Although only YouTube and Netflix are using it now, I reckon it won't be long until all streaming follows. Lower bandwidth consumption around the world isn't a bad thing actually.

And with Android TV pushing it heavily, I'd wouldn't be keen on out laying so much cash for a without it, or YouTube HDR.

Okay, they all play on my Shield, using VLC or NOVA player.

Thanks, for the clips
But YouTube AV1?

You downloaded each and played on VLC? I wonder how HDR works and if it's the same way?

So technically you're saying it's possible, but software limits the Shield to doing it natively?

See the second post - playing them in YouTube, the Fire TV MAX, plays AV1 version.

Shield plays VP9 version.

Downloaded the videos and they play in VLC and NOVA player.

Going to download the videos again, and specify AV1 codec. See if that gives me anything different. As I copied the download links from your posted videos, I do not expect to have gotten non- AV1 codec videos.

Okay, my assumption was wrong, but this is the result of specifying AV1 file download. 20220618_172452.jpg

This is on the Shield using VLC

So to summarize, The Shield will replay AV1 encoded video content, via VLC or NOVA player, provided the audio is in Opus format, but not if audio is m4a.

YouTube will not give you a AV1 encoded file to stream, but VP9, on the Shield.

Fire TV 4k MAX, will be given a AV1 encoded file to stream.

Strange.

So will do VP9, but not AV1?
And VP9.2? Also not supported?

It's unreal how many videos are already in AV1

Also a strange quirk

I have redone the m4a audio download, and it now also plays both 44.1 KHz 48 kbps and 44.1KHz 128 kbps audio - now scratching my head why the first download with m4a audio failed.

Spent my entire afternoon, to be left with a puzzle - that I cannot now investigate further as the offending file has been deleted. :(

Edit:

Found offending file still in recycle bin - has a bit rate of 0kbps - no guesses here as to why. :( :(

These are the formats available for those videos: No VP9.2

Torrent sites have an increasing number of files encoded as AV1 as well.

Most folks have little idea how much content is already available in AV1 format, as they do not have the means to play them, or they are not offered to them, as the platform has decided for what ever reason to give them an alternative codec format.

Sticking to subject, it sounds like Disney+ needs to implement some decent codecs...

Decent codecs yes, also a consistency in their content video resolution, bit rates etc.

If I did not know better, and just judging from the content, with all the consistency issues, I would not get the feeling that I am on a friend's PLEX server, where there is a mishmash of different video and audio qualities, reflecting all the varied sources he has used to create his content collection.

Being Disney, and with their content creation ability I expect a very much more coherent experience. Why Disney is such a disappointment/ let down for me.

thats what happens when you outsource to India :giggle:

I just get the feeling, that Disney decided that they needed to get a foot in the door here, but don't expect the market, to care about the overall experience, i.e. we are a bunch of idiots, that will be happy with anything they put up, no matter how crappy, scraps, with whatever they could just throw together.

I feel they did not give their offering much thought, and put even less effort into it. If it hurts them, they must not cry.

Disney Hotstar only used in third world countries where Disney assume streaming consumption is on mobile devices and data limited. Lower bitrate streams and a crippled app with less functionality for Hotstar. From what I read about constant buffering complaints during primetime (when their Netflix works perfectly) they clearly also have less servers for Disney Africa region leading to congestion and slow down.
