Will you do me a favour - when you find some YouTube AV1 encoded material you regard as having good content, send me 2-3 links, so I can get some content from a different source, to use as test files. Much appreciated.

I don't say that I don't have a bias at times - but I do it far less than what I've seen here :)

I'm happy to admit any short comings on any device I own or have used, rather than disregard/overlook the issues totally and defend the decision. I mean at one stage the Apple TV couldn't do YouTube in 4K and it's a rather glaring issue - but do you know how many people dismissed the fact they actually couldn't watch high res on YouTube?

There is no tearing rush, so whenever it suits you.

I expect that the content will not likely fall within my tastes, but one never knows, and I might be surprised.

What I want primarily for is AV1 content from a different source for testing purposes primarily.

If I appreciate what you send me links for, then it will be regarded, as a bonus.

AV1 saves space and bandwidth, but other than that I don’t see what benefit it offers me. In other words I have not yet encountered a compelling reason to care whether any piece of hardware has assisted decoding. I’m not even likely to care about the latter if software can decode it anyway. Basically at this point AV1 hardware decoding is a feature I might find myself caring about someday, but right now it doesn’t even make the list.

When it comes to YouTube I don’t see any benefit from very high resolution for the things that I watch. If I switch back and forth looking for differences I can see the 4k image is superior, but I have to be looking for it and it makes no practical difference. It’s not the same as dropping down to SD which actually results in important details becoming obscured.

Obviously if you have a huge screen with recent features like Dolby Vision and a sound system that supports Atmos then you start to care about those features, and possibly good old 1080p starts to look a bit drab and straight Dolby Digital Plus sounds flat.
 
Yep app doesn't work on Samsung tab S7 FE and have had intermittent issues on the mi sticks.

For you ? Sure .

There are still plenty running xDSL
There are still plenty running 20Mbs fibre
There are still plenty that run mobile / metered connections who'll love a 30% reduced bill

AV1 is available. It's ready. It's being adopted by more services.
It enables more options and flexibility - today, it may take the 16Mbps to 10Mbps at the same quality - next year it may increase the bitrate back to 16Mbps and offer 30% more quality / HFR / 10 bit video

Why buy an old unit now, when an AV1 unit is already available at very little (none?) extra and has some sort of future proofing built in ? It is - or going to be - a pre-requisite for any new Android TV device going forward. If there is a new Shield, it'll have AV1 for sure .

The Android TV chips (S905X/X2/X3) and (S905Y/Y2/Y3) are not powerful enough, according to what I've read, to offer software decoding .

That can be said about any technology - why bother to move forward with anything ?
Why better cameras on phones ? Why faster CPUs ? Wasn't last years A14 enough ?
Why 5 speakers over 2 ? Why 7 over 5 ? I can hear the movie anyway ?
Why higher resolution screens ?

Personally ? I'm not going to drop R5,000 on a Shield that cannot do YouTube HDR or AV1.

That connection is Fixed-LTE-A - and speed is variable. Which can be a real pain in the proverbial rear end.

Fiber is 300 meters away and has been for yonks, and not come any closer.

If AV1 codec can save 30% on the Wife's streaming bandwidth needs, [ soaps etc. ] and 30% on my own, [ sport, documetaries, etc. ] chances are that the buffering caused by the variable nature of internet connection, will decrease dramatically, or disappear completely.

If Wife is not bitching, I am happy, if my streaming is not buffering - I am happy. Win, Win ...

Youtube seems to be using it but limited still as it's too slow to encode all content to AV1. Only used for high view (millions view) youtube videos. So if you are not into main stream content on YT not much benefit for you there either.

And then we have Disney. Hmmm. They cant even sort out their current crap. Crap apps, Crap servers with slowdowns and buffering. I have no hope for them. If they invest in AV1 they will also most likely use in their Disney First World product/apps. Not in their Africa/India/Middle East targeted Disney Third World app (aka Hotstar). :ROFL:

The Fire Stick 4k Max or the Xiaomi Mi 4K TV Streaming Stick both can handle AV1 ...

Yeah, well, Google had a tiff with Roku, awhile back and part of the issue was AV1 encoding which Google was and still is pushing hard. It's encoding is a bit more intense than X265 which is more intense than X264. Such is life.

What is unclear is when it will become the default codec for streaming.

Don't know whether that will be before or after, some company decides to pull fiber past our Complex. What I do know is that it's higher streaming efficiency, will help negate a few of the potholes, and detours, on the Information Super Highway, to the benefit of myself and others.

We always encode at the highest available source resolution and frame rate. For example, for titles where the source is 4K and high frame rate (HFR) such as “Formula 1: Drive to Survive”, we produce AV1 streams in 4K and HFR. This allows us to present the content exactly as creatively envisioned on devices and plans which support such high resolution and frame-rate playback.

All AV1 streams are encoded with 10 bit-depth even if AV1 Main Profile allows both 8 and 10 bit-depth. Almost all movies and TV shows are delivered to Netflix at 10 or higher bit-depth. Using 10-bit encoding can better preserve the creative intent and reduce the chances of artifacts (e.g., banding).

Dynamic optimization is used to adapt the recipe at the shot level and intelligently allocate bits. Streams on the Netflix service can easily be watched millions of times, and thus the optimization on the encoding side goes a long way in improving member experience. With dynamic optimization, we allocate more bits to more complex shots to meet Netflix’s high bar of visual quality, while encoding simple shots at the same high quality but with much fewer bits
