Hello Guys

I am shopping for an ISP but regardless of who and what they are, when you look purely at performance and price, how are things (if you have signed up within this month or experiancing odd things with performance this month with said ISP)

Maybe you guys can fill in the blanks:

note: i have 2mb line and looking for attractive pricing without loosing performance (excl support, service etc)

Lets put this purely based on performance...

Openweb Capped - ?
Openweb Uncapped - There prices are attractive - R159 or something but performance?

Afrihost Capped - I assume the IPC thing is still an issue
Afrihost Uncapped - As above

Webafrica Capped - Hearing alot of good things, but the time allocated data puts me off (day, night data)
Web Africa Uncapped - ?

Mweb Capped - ?
Mweb Uncapped - ?

Crystal Web Capped - ?
Crystal Web Uncapped - Hearing nice things about them (apart from some issue they had this weekend reg. latency) but again price is huge

Anymore you can think of?

Suggestions?

I can recommend Crystal Web. Its still early days but I have been very impressed all round so I have not had any latency issues.

I came from Web Africa capped and it was a very good all round account. Consider their capped accounts as normal capped accounts with free midnight - morning data, similar to the Telkom capped accounts with free midnight to 7am data.

Just remember you get what you pay for - I wouldn't touch those Openweb accounts!

Afrihost has capacity problems in JHB and Cape. Durban
is fine in my experience.

I have a 2mb OpenWeb account - uncapped. I do roughly 300-350GB per month
- OpenWeb: R250 odd
- Telkom doBasic R220 odd (I'm sure you could save a few bucks here by taking the line only, though)
- Phone Rental: R165 odd
Total: R635

Now i'm thinking of doing what cavedog is doing. Getting the fastest Telkom line you can get with a capped account + Night Surfer
10mbps + 50GB
-Telkom doPremium Plus: R590
- Phone Rental: R165 odd
Total: R755

About R120 more expensive but I get a 10mbit line and can download a lot more between 00:00 - 07:00 on 10mbit with Telkom, than between 18:00-07:00 on 2mbit with OpenWeb.

If you live in a lucky area, you can get VDSL 20mbit for like R15 more.

I'd suggest you look at Telkom, they really seem to be getting their shlt together :)

I wouldn't touch OpenWeb.

I am happy with WebAfrica and Vox have been great for me too, in JHB.

You need to tell us more about how you will use the account.

How many GBs do you need a month?

What do you use the net for?

Openweb Capped - Actually decent
Openweb Uncapped - There prices are attractive - R159 or something but performance? That specific account is crap. Only look at Home premium which is basically Web Africa's Business account or Openweb Business which is a Afrihost business account

Afrihost Capped - I assume the IPC thing is still an issueThey say IPC upgrades have already been done, but from the feedback threads performance still looks crap
Afrihost Uncapped - As above The home accounts have extreme shaping. been like this for the last year even after the last round of IPC upgrades. If all you want to download Business is great for that. Streaming seems to be luck of the draw. Most people stream badly, while the odd guy will say no issues regardless of which account you take.

Webafrica Capped - Hearing alot of good things, but the time allocated data puts me off (day, night data)great bandwidth, but as said if you can't schedule things for midnight, maybe this isn't the account for you
Web Africa Uncapped - ?Really depends on how much you wanna download. Since it sounds like you don't like scheduling things for midnight you might wanna look at a business account

Mweb Capped - ? Ok from what i hear
Mweb Uncapped - ? if you take the premium account you'll probably be happy. no news server though

Crystal Web Capped - ? good/ok from what i hear

Here has been my experience:

Openweb - useless and they share accounts which is unethical.

Crystal Web- Was good for a short time, then the international bandwidth disappeared and I gave them two months until my patience ran out. Seems only select people get the bandwidth, depends on how much sucking up you do or whatever, I am not really sure.

Internet Solutions- fine for two weeks then they started throttling after 36 Gbytes of usage. So I left.

Afrihost- reliable connections but overseas bandwidth is lacking from day one. I am on a capped package and right now the overseas download speed is a joke.

Most if not all ISPs in this country suck at the moment, there's no easy solution, except, short of emigrating.

Crystalweb: Great xp so far, excellent customer service.
WebAfrica : Very good as well but don't like the having to use some data after midnight.
Afrihost: Good when they have capacity but that seems to be a yearly issue.
Mweb:The kings of throttling stay clear.
Openweb: Shares accounts stay far away.

MWEB is fine if you take premium.

You're comparing 10Mb with 2Mb. Lol

Stay well clear of Telkom. The fanbois are talking it up.

Maybe consider a 2meg capped account with 100gigs for < R200 from Axxess. Unshaped all the time.

I'm not comparing as such, just saying he can get a 10mb or 20mb instead of 2mb, for only +- R150 more.

im happy with WA
cancled my business to move to home as
just dont need that much data

streaming is great, just some bad days with youtube, but its more a youtube problem than WA's

torrents after 12 is great

i did 80gb with home uncap in oneday :)
stars taken a hit tho :P
but was still okeyish, streaming was slower on 2stars,but browsing was still fine etc

stay away from OW there bad news
Mweb,havent used them in years
last time i used AH,streaming was very bad,but downloads (torrents) was good 24/7 (on there business)

also u can ask for a 11day uncap trail from Plugg if u want to try them out

There's also incredible connection but I had a quick look at the shouting and nashing of teeth on Hellopeter and was put off. It's a pretty good indicator.

Crystal Web's prices just look a bit higher than all of the other. Is their service worth the extra money you spend with them?

We're marginally more expensive than our big red cousin on 2 and 4Mbps, the same on 10Mbps and 20Mbps, and cheaper on 40Mbps. New products and pricing being released very shortly too, but these are premium uncapped accounts - they're not basic home accounts. In this market you truly do get what you pay for. Like no star based, rolling window, shaped to death, throttled and confusing products. Just simple, uncapped accounts on premium bandwidth.

And this is the problem right here.

Crystal Web actually seems to work, while ISPs would rather charge less and throttle more.
