It’s war

Not expecting anything major either, as they said it won't affect the contract market that much, and those are the people more likely to value their numbers too.

dont think anythin's gonna happen now...but contracts do expire...sumtime...

And they better not tell me again that I have to stay on contract to keep my number when my contract expires.

I think Virgin might become a player now. Telkom needs some of this IMO.

Mobile operators have been nagging prepaid customers for weeks now to become contract subscribers... So there is something in the air...

I'm guessing they mean per user. Prepaid users were probably also more likely to move before MNP anyway.

I don't think a price war will break out, but smaller companies like CellC and Virgin will certaily benefiit from this.

contract subscriber's are loosing benefits left right and center .. pre paid almost seem they way to go.. prices are the same ..

I think prepaid market is huge and will spend where it is cheaper, the thing the these companies are hoping for OR perhaps know is how much their competition is willing to cut prices. I think the biggest looser will be the one that doesn't realize that prepaid users only use as little/as much pending the pricing, make it cheaper and they will spend + move especially when you get close to the high fixed line costs.

The contract user truly gets shafted in the end tho cause they can't move as easily and are a guaranteed source of income for x years.

I wonder if they realize that much like getting cheap starter packs.. you can't hold a prepaid customer ransom. i.e. if they change over to mobileProviderX and its pricing changes or becomes uncompetitive but can't change over for another 6 months, people will just say stuff it and get another starter pack. This could mean insane losses(apparently its costs to port per user.. i thought its one cost for entire system) as prepaid users drop numbers when they stuck and newer more competitive, cheaper packages come out that the new provider does not want to compete with.

How many contracts expire each month? Every one of those is a customer that could move. Sure once they've taken out another contract they're stuck for two years, but each month many people have the option of switching.

Exactly :) People are going to start talking and the next thing you know MNP beings to make a difference. Contract users are generally the big spenders.

"“It’s not our intention to start a price war, but if the market dictates that then we’ll have no choice.”"

Hey at least they have said that they can start one ... please let it happen ...

... then we can only hope the cell networks get an even higher percentage of calls as the price gap between landlines and cellular narrows - every cent less to Telkom, benefits us all.

whatever, they'll keep charging what the hell they want and work together to keep their charges high.
Look at the banks.

like mtn said "customers want quality and low prices" ya right....prove it.
