Getting good reviews. Really amped to read at least half of the novel before I watch it.

You should do that. It gives a lot more info on the history of the town and Pennywise. Sometimes, a tad bit too much though.
This is part 1 and part 2 will only be released next year.

Why?
Watching the movie version first usually destroys any chances of reading the book.
Spoilers, but won't give away that much.
Watched this over the weekend.
My thoughts are its definitely better than the original, something I have never said about a horror remake, but that said the original IT was never really that good. I have never been a big fan of Stephen King, most of his movies have been over rated. The exeptions being The Shinning, The green Mile and Shawshank redemption.
The movie itself was not really that scary, but the sound of the movie was good and it created a scary atmosphere, almost like the old John Carpenter movies.
Also loved the humor of the movie, I laughed more than I actually got scared and absolutely loved how it felt like we were back in the 80's or early 90's. It has alot of similarities to that of "stranger things" and "Super 8".
I doubt "part 2" will be as good, the reason this one was as good was beacuse of the kids combined with the humor that the kids brought, it brings that element of a "fun to watch" movie (as with Stranger things and Super 8)
Pennywise was portrayed brilliantly, even though the movie was not that scary, that is one scary clown. I found the dancing scene quite disturbing (don't ask me why

But yeah, can definitely recommend this if you are looking for good horror movie, its defninately one of the better horror movies i have watched the last couple of years. If you are looking for Conjuring/Insidious frights you will be disappointed though.

Recently re-watched the original so my frame of reference should be spot on.
The new version is highly entertaining & engaging. Really loved the modern feeling uptake & different film structure vs the 1990 original. Properly scary & thrilling at the same time. Top job from all the kids. While I still prefer Tim Curry as Pennywise I must say Bill Skarsgård done a convincing job.
The R-rating really worked well. The take of tragedy & friendship was also done in a well documented manner as well.
Chapter 2 in late 2019...yes please.

Andy Muschietti's version is much darker with more more depth to each of the characters, and ofcourse with some writing done by Cary Fukunaga, how could this not be good? My only dissapointment being that the Patrick Hockstetter character wasn't much explored.
I would have preferred the late 50s setting too but I do understand the director's decision to use the more modern 80s theme setting. Makes more sense.
As with Muschietti's previous excellent movie, Mama, he manages to conjure up a brooding dark atmosphere interspersed with little comic moments to take the edge off.
Can't wait for Chapter 2.

Not as awesome as The Shawshank Redemption, the secret window, is also pretty decent, just got Geralds Game to watch this weekend which looks pretty decent.I am sad however there was going to be a The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon movie which stalled.

I feel that Stephen King is overrated. I loved his books +/-15 years ago, since then his writing has gone a bit downhill imho.
I fully agree, he has a few masterpieces which probably accumulates to 5% of his work, the other 95% is utter nonsense. I enjoyed "Mr Mercedes" though.
King also has an obsession with glowing green things...:erm:
