IT skills crisis

But yah, there a lot of entry level positions in IT especially in cpt. Heck i've not got any IT diploma(ccna, mcse, a+ etc) and write their entrance tests (if they have), interview and get called back for job :) but the hours weren't nice.. now got eng degree and can't find a jb and IT companies say over qualified(heck i was/am looking for something temporary till i find an eng job!!) LOL. such is life with murphy's law ;)

I think they'd rather see 10 code monkeys get pushed into the market than 1 more post grad, which I suppose makes sense.

Currently what the companies are saying is that they cannot find any good technical people who they can employ i.e affirmative action is making it difficult to find someone whom they can employ.

I have seen it many times, being involved in IT myself, we find a staff member who fits the PD qualifications and has an actual clue but only lasts for 3 months because everyone is desperately looking for someone like that and they get offered alot more by some other company so they leave.

@JNS1975 - Nothing wrong with being a Brain Dump MCSE. Being an MCSE in any case does not make you more proficient in whatever systems you specialize in than the person that has years of experience. In the MCSE exam, there are loads of questions with more than one correct answer, but the one they want, is 'the MICROSOFT way of doing things'. And yeah, A+ and N+ are useless.
 
I've said stuff the job search. The IT skills crisis is a load of rubbish. There are tons of qualified people with degrees or diploma's sitting at home. I did plenty of sitting :(

Started a small business repairing Xbox 360s and the odd desktop/network support call-out.

My last job I was paid R4000 a month for a 6 month contract with option of renewal. On the last day of the contract they told me to work for another month so that I can be evaluated. I never returned ...

I'm a "so-called" coloured, 27 years old and have a love for IT. There are qualifications & experience on my CV, but I get given the run-around by companies where I've had interviews.

So what are my options? Start my own company or emigrate. It's sad!
 
Im graduating in November from Torque-IT, 2008 Network course, so keep fingers crossed for me guys! :)

A+ N+ Linux+ MCSE *Exchange elective* and CCNA!

Bah, that doesn't sound good. Hope you succeed with your own company - it'll be tough, but it can be done.

So I'll rather be sitting here where I get a good pay at least....
 
Sad cases...

My brother also does IT, worked in Belgium for a year. After that year was up they begged him to go back, but he wanted to try his luck here. He could not find any job other than IT teacher at a school. He hates it, and the work is crap hard. He is not a qualified teacher, but schools are desperate.

Once again, if they need qualified IT guys, invest in a school they see fit, make sure the geeks or wanna be geeks go there, educate them, give them toys, and the market could thrive. My brother teaches a bunch of kids, all poor, and the black kids don't want to do anything, they expect government to give them on a silver plate. The white kids are too depressed to work 'cos they come from poor families where the parents don't have work, and they don't see any use in doing anything. Poverty in whichever form and whichever colour is an evil thing. Black and white people need to change their attitude. Humans need to change their attitude. Always finding an excuse, no matter what. But also, government needs to find ways to encourage students, teach them that they need to wipe their own butts, and not expect Zuma to come do it.

Poverty: the vicious circle...

What they mean is there is a shortage of people with skills who are prepared to work for next to nothing.

Tell a company/ small to medium business they need a backup solution and you would swear you wanted them to cancel Christmas.

Hitting the nail on the head there....

late last year when I was looking for a job I saw many IT specialist job ads in the papers. They wanted to pay a succesful candidate R5000 per month, to use his own car to go to clients and he had to be proficient in Cisco IOS and all that kind of thing. Are they crazy or what? R5000 doesn't cover all the petrol, or maintenance on the car. And BTW they did not offer a travelling allowance. I call that exploitation.

Unfortunately yes, this is an all too common trend. The one outfit whom I did the IT for, were just as tight-arsed because any expenditure on IT meant a corresponding dent in the pocket lining.

Exactly.

I've often had to mobile support, know servers, figure out all sorts of network configurations, buy software and hardware, do backup's, etc for 5k.

Then when I go for a 8-10k job where the ad is looking for 2 years experience, then I get turned down. You're not an ideal candidate. You don't have MCSE or Cisco experience ... or some half arsed excuse ... WTF ?!?

I'll figure it out within a week and still know more than a guy who blew 20k on studying that stuff. Madness :mad:

There is massive exploitation in the market. It makes people lose hope :eek:
