IT skills crisis

DELEGATES from hundreds of companies attending a technology conference in Cape Town have been urged not to expect the government to solve the education problem, but rather to sponsor a school themselves

If there is such a huge crisis, why are people with experience battling to find work?

Yeah! Cause I got MAD skills. :D

Actually the biggest problem is that normal businesses still don't really believe that IT can and should be a business asset. Look after it (IT), feed it (money) and the business will see returns.

If there is such a skills crisis then why did the government turn be down for a bursary for post grad computer science? Am I bitter? :p

I think they'd rather see 10 code monkeys get pushed into the market than 1 more post grad, which I suppose makes sense.

I think it is more a case of an "AA IT skill shortage". There are plenty of positions available, but only if you want to be the programmer, oracle database admin, web designer and helpdesk support guy for R10k a month (if you have x years experience).

I also don't see any skills crisis...have been looking for something else for a number of months now...nothing!

South Africa is still riding the wave but I expect it will turn around relatively soon, like it has in other parts of the world.

Yea, i'm starting to wonder about this so called IT skill shortage. There's plenty of people, and heck even our company when we really focused on getting people, we got them. But we are an IT company [as opposed to a bank/non-it company needing IT services]. I don't think non-IT companies are prepared to pay or even recruit IT people and then just throw up their hands and go "SA sucks, no IT skills".

Sure, there probably are a -black- shortage or even on a senior level , but again i don't think companies are even prepared to pay them, so why call it shortage?

"Oh, it's not our fault there is a shortage. You should pay for it." That is all I read. They are probably refering to previously disadvantaged children. Because they are clearly not interested in getting the emmigrants back.

What a load of crap, Im an admin who has very strong business sense and it took me ages to find a job and then it was a compromise of accepting less than I was worth.

Currently what the companies are saying is that they cannot find any good technical people who they can employ i.e affirmative action is making it difficult to find someone whom they can employ.

I have seen it many times, being involved in IT myself, we find a staff member who fits the PD qualifications and has an actual clue but only lasts for 3 months because everyone is desperately looking for someone like that and they get offered alot more by some other company so they leave.

Too Many Cheats!!!!!!!

Is there hope when the “so called” qualified few are CHEATS!!!!!!! We developed an internal test for hopefuls who wanted to join our IT department. To tell you the truth we needed to filter the BS from the CV’s. The test comprised of two parts, theory and practical. The test is basic and should not be a problem for individuals with an A+ (USELESS QUALIFICATION!!!!!). We have yet to see an MCSE pass this test. Most MCSE's out there are Brian Dump MCSE's. Their qualification isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on!

I have been applying for some job recently, and there have been a lot of call backs. It seems that at least the banks need some qualified IT people. Also I have got calls from places I haven't even sent my CV to, yet they have got hold of it, so there is some demand for Computer Science honours.

I agree, been there, seen it for myself. The MCSE back in the day was punted as a "get-rich-quick" card and exploited as such. I remember the ad's on the radio and saw my many colleagues who fell for it hook, like, and sinker, come slinking back 18 months later 'cos they couldn't find a job, nor impress the people they tried to work for that they were up to scratch.

as said previously, this entire article is not about a general "IT skills shortage" but rather an shortage of "AA IT Skills", or "AA Highend IT Skills".

If you look at your CCIE's, RHCE's and your highly qualified IT people, there isn't much in the way of AA in the market. This is the shortage they are referring to. But yes, there is a lot of BS IT people out there.

yeah then u get some people that have the knowledge but still cant find a job either. if i could find a job as a juniour. I would be glad and then always work yourself up but companies dont seem to be that desperate.

Well I am an engineer and I wanted to go into IT to get away from the carp that takes place in my industry... I am still trying, it is really hard.

Crap! I know a lots of technicians with years of exp that pays R3000 - R5000 a month. It seems the programmers get all the money.
