IT skills crisis

Hi everyone, I new here.

I need some advice, Ive been in the telecoms industry for over two years now, working for one of SAs leading cellular network providers.
I am currently in the process of completing my Btech in telecoms. One of my subjects is computer networks, which I find quite interesting.

I am planning on doing a CCNA and CCNP once Ive completed my Btech.
How valuable is a CCNA or CCNP certificate in the networking world?
I know there are companies like Neotel who are runninig most of their communications systems over IP, I am looking for a Telecoms/IP job.
I don't know if I'm lookinig in the wrong places or there's really no jobs in that field. I have been searching but can't find anything.

Please advise.

The Cisco certifications are very good if you would like to get into IP.

Can I ask where you did your Btech?
 
I'm doing my btech with University of Johannesburg. will have 6 out of 10 subjects complete by the end of the year.

CCNA/CCNP vs CCDA/CCDP???

In all my years of overseas IT experience, I come accross South Africans of all backrounds... black, white, coloured, indian and whatever else there is, and they are all overseas for one reason... hard cash.

SA business is not prepared to pay for qualified people, so then they must go without. That is why I am where my 'location' thingy says I am.

Pity, as I would love to come home, but I can afford to :(

Been getting more calls for Linux support this month than ever before. Something is up. I decline them because they want folks at the office 24/7 and those days are gone afaiac.

Ja, I'll stay here in South Africa, know the place and all that. Besides, if you go overseas, you'll have to start from scratch. With a wife and kids that'll be more difficult to.

Not working overtime anymore - got burnt by previous company insisting we work overtime and not compensating for that. So, I avoid overtime work in general now.

Unless it is for myself (private job) and one which I know will be paid for.

So am I, lots of people asking me to help with their boxen or to fix problems.
