IT staff 'spying on colleagues'

I password protect all personal folders in any case.

And [-]cum[/-] spit on my keyboard before I leave the office.

Thats disgusting, you should all be ashamed of yourselves.

It's amazing that IT juniors are left in charge of sensitive company information too... That's what you get when you skimp on the IT staff budget. You need skilled, ethical and mature people there - it's becoming imperative these days...
Another reason to outsource sparingly...

password protect

if you guys are worried about ur data , try truecrypt .

Its opensource and pretty tough .

Oh and i can vouch the fact that most IT staff members know the salaries of the entire company :D

I have never spied on anyone, even when I was an admin and had passes. But maybe thats just cause I don't care ^_^

But salaries should be public anyway..

Can't fault PGP either (so long as you don't forget your passphrase).

People will always snoop - the only thing that you can do is try to manage the degrees of snooping! I know the new sharepoint has item level security; which implies you need to be a specific person to view that information; not just have specific rights - this however does nothing when people steal a password!

In outsourcing, one is less inclined to look at sensitive data, mainly because it's not your own company.

The whole thing about access is IT's dirty little secret. As a sysadmin, I can untraceably (anyone who has tried to track stuff down in audit logs knows what I mean) get into anyone's mailbox, their PC, their network files, just about anything.

That said - I don't, except in the execution of my duties. I try to deal with data as ethically as I can. I've been placed in a position of responsibility and trust, aand I don't want to violate that trust.

I have been in charge of a lot of sensitive data in my time - chances are I have access to *your* personal information somewhere.

Truth be told though, I could not be bothered "snooping". What the hell is the point?
True some people WILL snoop - but that is true of any "group". The junior clerk probably snoops on her boss's computer as well. It is not just us bad "IT okes".

the definitely definitely should not be public

I resigned from my previous job in Feb this year because of this nonsense. I caught them spying on everything. I did not abuse the e-mail but in some situations like when I moved I had no choice but to use the company e-mail to sort stuff out for the new house with the attorneys. So in July 2007 I sent a few e-mails (with the blessing of the CEO) to the attorneys to make them hurry up with the transfer duty and stuff.

In January this year I caught the CEO of the company red-handed in possession of those e-mails- he accidentally responded to one of the conversations I had with the lawyers. Instead of laying a charge I decided to rather just take my stuff and go and I managed to get them to pay me out 3 months' salary. With luck I already had a job lined up because I was sick of the spying.

They also used their loyal IT dog to try and sniff up my network at home so I blocked all their IP addresses

My friends who I left behind there are all complaining about the spying now in a big way. They are now apparently also tapping phone calls and stuff. We now all communicate via SMS only.

And this is a well-known medium sized company in SA that is a household name...

In my new job I am the IT administrator Right from the beginning it was made clear that I will be privvy to certain things it was negotiated in the interview and laid out on the table with EVERYONE's agreement and reduced to writing.

I sure do hope my IT company isn't spying on me.
By the way, I work at the best company in the world, and the IT staff are amazing.

That's just not right. I'm sure it happens more than we know though.

Please note the difference here.
In this case it is almost "corporate policy" to spy, it is not some lone IT oke deciding he is bored and wants to trace which porn sites you go to.

While both cases are wrong, the difference is large.

IT Staff who look up things outside their scope of work should be reprimanded (in the least), fired outright and possibly even PROSECUTED.

People in such positions should sign confidentiality clauses IMO, and if they breach them, they should be fired/prosecuted. You can't look up someone's
personal info (which is not of your concern anyway) by mistake.
