It's Mr Video versus Universal Studios

Yeah. Make them stop importing those rubbish NTSC discs please!

I actually find the Zone 1 / NTSC dvds to be of superior quality to the Ster Kinekor / Nu Metro releases, especially as far as subtitles and bonus features are concerned. (I'm not talking about the technical differences between NTSC and PAL)

The NTSC videos as everyone knows have 30fps to 25fps on PAL,
while the vertical resolution is a bit less, its not really noticeable.

Region 1 has the greatest selection of titles, including international
titles too.

Unsurprisingly their statements show total ignorance, but even if this were true so what?

I think its probably a local NM/SK goon expressing his ignorant views.
Then again, they are RIGHT for the other things.

SK/NM pay a lot of money to Universal and the other Hollywood schlock
distributors. They get undercut by people who although import titles
legitimate for PRIVATE HOME USE importation, do so for the purpose
of rental. NM/SK could also import R1 then.

MrVideo should maybe just concentrate on Anime DVDs then.
AFAIK NM/SK would never shell out the exhorbitatant fees
per show the Japanese co's ask nor pay the extra for dubbing/translation
to US companies. It would still be taboo :) but I won't imagine anyone
complaining nor the Japanese caring to do anything about this.

The NTSC videos as everyone knows have 30fps to 25fps on PAL,
.

But the movies were filmed at 24fps... so in order to create 30fps, new frames need to be created (this is usually done via 2:3 pulldown) and this has an impact on quality. [

PAL just runs the 24 frames slightly faster. A well mastered PAL DVD, on a good TV will generally look better than an NTSC one. Higher resolution, better colour fidelity and no frame manipulation. However most people will never see the difference, and the better packaged contents usually outweigh the slight difference in quality.

You're right but many of these productions also get done in 50i video
and not 35mm film, and not just documentaries. You're right about the pulldown and telecine.

I haven't noticed a difference though. I usually favour the R1/R2 NTSC
releases myself because of the wider selection and richer options as you say.

To really tell the difference you'd need both DVDs to play side by side at the same time.
Since most people have only one big screen TV and only one DVD (PAL ones are
usually not even available) you can't really tell or at least I can't tell with my
huge mostly R1/R2 NTSC dvd library can't tell :).

Er... what chip are they removing? The one embedded in the DVD? No one actually buys DVD players from Mr Video, so what in the hell are they on about. Oh, and kudos to Mr Video for bypassing this stupid region idea.

For interests sakes, Mr Video give you a typed out form with instructions on how to remove the zone code from your DVD player.

Goodness - they are probably in contravention of someone's rights to material posted on the internet.

AFAIK Sony DVD players are sold in SA as region free - but their playstations aren't

Well it doesn't really matter to me if disc's are region coded or not since I unlock all my dvd players. I have imported dvd's that needs an unlocked player to play.

Mr Video will lose this. Plus are they buying renatl copies of the movies.. if so then Universal's lawyers are idiots. and if not, then they are in even mroe caque.....

mr video or Mr Oridong kjaja's Video's..I dont care...burn them all down..I'll go watch my movies at the Kinekor(so much more of an experience), and if I like it then I'll buy it..plain and simple...oh and screw all you people who can afford HD tv's..i dont like I hate and I dont want to be your friends!(...unless u invite me over to come watch a movie :p)

exactly other reason why i import. i have one NTSC video costed me R600, well what can i say i was a SW fan back then and besides that 10cm piece of the original film.....

So it's a list of manufacturers and model numbers with work-arounds for each one?

Does such a thing even exist in region 1?

The FBI warning says you're not allowed to distribute the content of
the video, by renting it out/public exhibition- you're pirating it. You need a rental licence
for each DVD or title.

Means nothing. They have that on official rental titles in South Africa and probably the same in the US. The FBI warning looks ancient and is probably on every version. Early attempts to introduce rental pricing in the US failed.

I think NM/SK are the problem.. they admit openly to stalling releases even just to pocket more money.. or maybe i should say less money ;) They foolish in a way, lets look at whats happen in the last 10 yrs of their dominating the industry..

lets see
prices has doubled to tripled
cinema's have gone crappy(seriously, here in cape town, u must check out the theatre when the lights are on, they like telkom, no maintenance till it falls apart.)
piracy has increased drastically even though bandwidth costs are extreme (imagine what this means wrt their distribution stranglehold)

It must. Its all about rights management. You can open a videostore and go n buy retail copies of DVD's and then rent them out. The copyrights that are sold to you when you buy a rental copy do not extend to allowing you to rent out the DVD. This is the same all over the world.

PLUS, Mr Video will lose, either the case or going forward. There is a very easy way for copyright owners to block people from selling copyrighted items. The same is not true for trade marked goods, thus we have grey goods.

One large movie studio vs Mr Video, of cause Mr Video will lose, what they are doing is not exactly legal. Think about this can you imagine what would happen if I opened a video store and rented movie from overseas before they are on circuit here. I would be shot
