Advice needed: iTunes music streaming - iPad

Hi, I need some advice on music streaming. My current setup as follows -

- PC in study
- AV receiver in living room
- Zound speakers and ipod dock in braai room (http://www.zound.co.za/zound_za4_page1.htm)

I mostly listen to music in the braai room, using an iPod Classic. In the living room I stream via a PS3 from the PC. I would like to have the following setup -

- stream iTunes to AV receiver in living room
- stream iTunes to braai room speaker/dock setup
- be able to control iTunes with my iPad (I guess this could be done via Home Sharing or an app like SplashTop which I purchased yesterday)

The bewildering array of options has left me completely confused as to how to proceed. If you have any suggestions/advice it would be much appreciated.

EDIT/ this may the answer, anyone with experience on these? Airport Express

The built in Remote app works well, and its free. :)

I've got a couple of the Airport Expresses and they work as designed. I can stream to them from my iPad or iTunes.

These Airport Express thingies look very cool! So I buy two, plug them into my AV receiver and iPod dock and voila, I can stream to them from the PC - whilst controlling everything from my ipad. As simple as that?

Have you encountered any issues/functionality problems?

My set up is this. I've got a computer (mac mini) running itunes as part of my home entertainment system which I play my music from. Then I have the one airport express plugged into a boom box that we use outside for parties. I can control the mini's itunes from my ipad and from there select which devices I want the music pumped out too (single or multiple).

Awesome thanks, off to Digicape to buy one right now. :D

No prob, don't forget you can also use it as a print server :)

EDIT - I'm not sure if it's going to work with the AV system if you're going to use it as audio source.

I doubt it. I was gonna ask as well what he would need the ipod and dock for if he wants to stream via airport express. I'm not sure but I think he's confusing something here.

Siris, this setup will replace the iPod and dock, are you aware of this?

I'm looking for a more elegant total solution, hence not using the dock anymore (as a dock) as it's a pita to physically sync the ipod with my pc. So the dock will be used as a "stream receiver" only, managed from the ipad. Does that make sense?

Sitting in my car in front of Digicape, but can't get out, it is pissing down atm. :-)

It depends on what he wants to do. The set up I'm talking about makes the PC running iTunes the master and all the airport expresses slave units so if he wants to listen to itunes on his AV system he'll need to attach an airport express to that too. He then uses the iPad Remote app to control the PC's itunes.

Exactly. Got one now, will report back after testing.

All you need to do is connect the airport express to the hifi and set it up. You can stream directly from the iPad to the airport.

Indeed you can but not to a PC which is annoying as it is an integral part of my home entertainment system.

Yes, the airport express streams to the AV receiver. I still don't understand the dock streaming thing. What kind of dock are you talking about?

I'm totally confused now

It took me a while to get my Netgear router to recognise the AirPort Express, but working perfectly now. Streamed from itunes to AE, and also streamed TuneIn radio directly from ipad to AE. Pretty schweet little device this. :D

Haven't tried Remote yet, as I can't get it to download from the appstore (an irritating little issue I occasionally get with apps :(). Going to try SplashTop in the mean time.

Imagine the dock as not being a dock (:p), but rather simply a pair of speakers with aux input. I want to stream to them from itunes. Which I now managed with the AE.

Definitely grabbing another AE tomorrow for the AV receiver.

OK, makes more sense now

The Splashtop app is very cool btw. Full remote access to your desktop. I remoted into my pc with the ipad, loaded PS3 Media Server so I could stream video to the PS3 - all whilst comfortably lying on my couch in front of the tv. :-)

Downloaded Splashtop just now, $0.99 sale still going on. :) Only hitch is the mini acting as my media server now has to be updated to 10.6 before I can run it. :o

I'm using splashtop to play online poker on the ipad, however, I should leave it coz I'm on a losing streak and may ipad is clearly in danger of getting thrown against the wall.

Sorry, forgot to mention that. :o Glad you managed to get it at the special price.
