Jack Russell bites baby's ear off

A 17-month-old baby from eMalahleni lost her right ear after it was bitten off by the family's pet Jack Russell terrier, Beeld reported on Monday.

Doctors struggled for a week to save Jolizne Bester's reattached ear, but eventually had to amputate at the Wilgers Hospital in Pretoria.

Her parents, John and Elizma, said they had no idea why the dog, Bakkies, had bitten their child, as the two were inseparable.

The dog was euthanased on the same day.

Almost guaranteed that the baby done something to the dog. Obviously can't blame the kid, but I've seen many a child play rough with a cat or dog; pulling ears, slapping them, etc. Like that video where the kid beats the crap out of a cat and the cat effs it up. My brother, as a youngster, poked our Boerboel in the nads and he spun around and bit him.

Poor kid. At least they should be able to grow her a cartilage scaffold and grow skin over it when she is 18. Maybe even earlier.
And yes. Poor dog. But if it bites you have to put it down. Especially little dogs.

Agreed. My Jack Russel is friendly, but kids tend to hurt/bother him and he doesn't like that (and he will show it). He will play with them (swim etc) but don't hurt him, he will bite ...

The parent's of the kid should have watched the kid with the dog (with any animal actually)....

We were actually taking about this just now in the office. All of us are parents. You don't leave your baby/toddler with a dog alone. It's an animal, can snap at anytime.

And yes.. poor Jack. They are crazy loveable doggies... obsessed with playing with tennis balls .

it's a damn shame that a dog has to be put down. The parents should be put down for child neglect.

my son has a jack russell and they're best friends, the most harm he has ever done is accidentally scratch him when he was excited to see him

Jack Russells are not baby friendly. My mom's 'well natured, harmless' Jack Russell tried to bite my toddler in the face, but luckily I saw it coming and pulled her away just in time.

jack russell's are very possessive, my family has two jack russells, the oldest female is possessive of my mom and will growl and bite anyone that comes near her. the younger jack russell is the opposite and is loving towards everyone - but fights with the husky. my sun often hugs the little jack russell and sneaks him food when we're not looking
