Jack Russell bites baby's ear off

How long was the dog unattended with the kid for it to rip off his ear? A dog like a staffie or pitbull would do it in one go, but not a Jack Russel. I have two adorable dogs - a minature daschund and a ...a... something (Jack Russel, Daschund, Staffie, Ridgeback cross)
They both have a good temperament, but I would not leave my 3 year old son alone with them.

it's a dog with limited understanding. if you grab a dog's tail it will turn around and bite you if it feels threatened. you can tell when a dog is uncomfortable, i see my dogs hair on her back raise up when she is angry and just from the posture a dog takes you can tell what it's trying to do.

these were idiotic parents

really? the dog didn't have to be put down, it's a small dog it wouldn't have done it if the baby wasn't left alone with it to begin with. i blame the parents in this case.

when things like this happens, the parents are always to blame. negligence on the part of the parents.

Yes exactly that. It doesn't take much for JRs to feel threatened about their position in the 'pack'. Particularly the alpha dog. Paranoid little buggers.
 
There are thousands of people with kids and jack russells.

If you guys were really aware of this, wouldn't it rather be good to make the effort and make a blog about how not to have jack russells and kids? Perhaps post a link here then.

This is probably more productive than just badmouthing the parents who never had bad intentions in the first place or perhaps themselves had JR dogs when they grew up and never had issues.

Same recently with woman who was killed near certain area in CT - everyone was 'yeah well she shouldn't have been there' - she wasn't even from CT - share this inate knowledge of the members of myBB somewhere.

Call it MyBB_KB
1. Dont walk alone near Bo-Kaap - you will die
2. Dont have JR Dogs near kids - they will bite their ears off.

No one could have known this - it happened. People can now be more aware yes - thats the point.
 
Her parents, John and Elizma, said they had no idea why the dog, Bakkies, had bitten their child, as the two were inseparable.

What? Do people not do some basic research on what breed of dog has what sort of temperament before getting it?
Do holiday makers (or whatever the "woman" was) not do any basic research before wandering off blindly?

Sorry, you may be well intentioned, but people need to take responsibility for some of the things they choose to do.

so they should have taken a pug, maybe a poodle? Never heard of them attack children

I mean its the 3rd best dog for children according to first hit on google

I'm sorry, but I'm battling to hear anything over the sound of your obsessive need to make excuses for this dog. It's the same with every dog attack thread, all the white knights come out in flying colors in defense of dogs. This little cretinous mutt got put down because he crossed the line. Don't tell me dogs aren't naughty, and they know when they've crossed the line. If it's naughty, you punish it. This punishment was fitting. Good riddance.
 
I remember a few years ago the resident vetenarian on Cape Talk / Radio 702 (Dr Plutzhund...or something like that) mentioned that the largest number of dogs, by far, that he has to put down are Jack Russels, for attacking owners or owners children.
They are hyper-energetic dogs that need huge amounts of exercise or they pretty much go psychotic.
 
What about cats? I'm sure the odd kid gets scratched but never heard of any body parts getting ripped off.. are they a safer option?
