Jail sentence.

R80k spread over few months is not alot if you using that money to support your family

I think the harshness of the sentence must be linked to that she repeatedly stole. and for some reason white collar crime is a more heinous crime than rape and murder.

WTH is wrong with you people?

SHE STOLE MONEY!

Simple as that, she got 3 years and rightfully so. Simple as that. There is no reason now to feel sorry for her, she made her choice. She needs to server her time and then hopefully she has learnt her lesson. I think Polsmoor is probably not the best place to send someone for theft, but that's the cards she was dealt.

I have no issue with her sentence. I feel for the poor kids, but she should have though about that before she stole. Even if it was R 1k makes no difference.

dude. WTF is wrong with you. I wasn't pleading her case for her. she got a harsher sentence compared to your friend killer. I was just lamenting the fact that killers and rapists get more lenient sentences. maybe she can also get out in 6 months hey. like your buddy.

She stole from her employer?

I have had similar cases of bookkeepers stealing a lot more than that without getting jail sentence. I guess it depends on the charges laid by the person the money was stolen from and the circumstances. Pollsmoor is a bit unlucky.

It depends on whether the company presses charges. Often times they drop it, or don't file them at all, because of the damage their name might get.

Yea, ofc... you obviously have no idea what you talking about.

Sentences have a minimum and maximum sentence. The judge decides which based on facts of the case. She obviously got a harsher sentence for a reason (we don't have the facts) But we all see she has kids and a husband and now "shame to poor woman"... cry us a river...

Whether the sentence is hard or not, I cannot tell you, but when you do a crime, you open yourself up to a perceived unfair sentence. If she didn't steal, she wouldn't have this problem. If she had been framed, she'd have my sympathy, but if someone stole that much money from me, I would make pretty sure their sentence is as long and harsh as legally possible.

In other words, put yourself in the victim's shoes and see if you'd still have sympathy with her.

It's interesting. Google 'Dealstream' or 'Stuart Deel-Smith' for just two local examples of local white collar crime. The perpetrators are happily living and working overseas. I think the majority of white collar crime either goes unpunished (particularly the very high profile businesspeople) or gets shut down too late.

Most people knew that Platinum Forex and 'Pastor' Colin Davids was a scam and most people realised Cambist was unsustainable. Similarly, it should be obvious that MMM is a scam - but it's still running and lots of people are going to lose lots of money.

Most of the people involved with these pyramid schemes will never see jail time. White collar crime is difficult to prosecute because the criminals are generally more intelligent and organised and hide behind a forest of trusts and separate businesses.

The fact, however, is that scams like this and corruption too, amount to theft and the scale is much larger than 80K.

As a member of society I would personally be happy with house arrest for the period of her initial sentence. There is no need to punish innocents, the children and husband in this case.

Forward thinking societies would come up with much more humane yet effective methods of correction instead of throwing a mother of 3 children into a hell hole like Polsmoor for what is a non-violent crime.

So a 20 year single male should go to jail? Why does a mother make one special? She surely wasn't thinking of the kids when she was doing it

This^ I mean they don't just send people to jail for shoplifting?

Especially not Polsmoor

Feel sorry for the kids. Very little chance for them in life, hope they overcome the difficulties they're facing.

so like akes says ...rape and murder carries an easier sentence

Thats why i like mybb. You get to read both sides of the spectrum. My concern however lies with my friend. He only gound out about it the day the bomb went off. She took small amounts over a long time so harder to detect there is extra cash groceries or whatever.

Just 1 small correction, in 6 months she can apply to be considered for parole - dont know how long it will take the parole board to make a decision and how long it takes after that.

Doesn't make her special. Im thinking of the kids, even if she didn't. And also I'm wondering how her stealing R80k in small amounts over a period and getting sent to Pollsmoor is worse than stealing R200 million plus and getting sent to Tuynhuys...

All depends on the circumstances. The judge sets the jail term based on evidence given. I might not always agree to it, but I'm not the judge.
