Jail sentence.

Doesn't make her special. Im thinking of the kids, even if she didn't. And also I'm wondering how her stealing R80k in small amounts over a period and getting sent to Pollsmoor is worse than stealing R200 million plus and getting sent to Tuynhuys...

What's that place and who was sent there?

Thats why i like mybb. You get to read both sides of the spectrum. My concern however lies with my friend. He only gound out about it the day the bomb went off. She took small amounts over a long time so harder to detect there is extra cash groceries or whatever.

By all means, I feel deeply for the friend and their kids. Sure, she made a mistake and she's paying for it. I doubt it makes her any less of a person after serving her jail term and she's rehabilitated. There is nothing wrong with him loving her and now suffering because of her mistakes. They can get through it. Just need to stick it out. I can't imagine my life with the wife in jail and having to look after the kids myself. Holy crap. But should it happen I'll adapt and survive. Doubt it would change anything between us though. Damn, she'll be able to wear a shirt that says: "I survived Polsmoor" actually quite an achievement :p

Just 1 small correction, in 6 months she can apply to be considered for parole - dont know how long it will take the parole board to make a decision and how long it takes after that.

O so minimum 6 months then.

If she's a good prisoner she should get out within 6-8 months. They should just be strong.

R80k spread over few months is not alot if you using that money to support your family

over how long a period of time?

say it was 2 years which is a long time not to notice theft, that is R3.3k p/m which for me would make a significant improvement in my lifestyle

Pollsmoor doesn't rehabilitate convicts, it takes petty thieves and turns them into hardened criminals. It's certainly not a place you can be proud of surviving.

She stole from her employer?

I have had similar cases of bookkeepers stealing a lot more than that without getting jail sentence. I guess it depends on the charges laid by the person the money was stolen from and the circumstances. Pollsmoor is a bit unlucky.

I know someone who stole R300k and got correctional supervision. They did pay the money back though.

Just surviving that place is a miracle. One should be proud. Not that fact that you where in there ofc, but getting out in one piece is a damn good achievement. /Polsmoor achievement unlocked :D

sorry but there is a reason why there are repercussions for things you do i.e. steal and you pay the price. murder and you pay the price.
now she did not steal from the tooth fairy or the easter bunny, she stole from a person who gave her employment and this money is a substantial amount. this could keep the employer afloat depending on how big or small his business is.
so, no, you don't steal the end.

You won't come out the same person though.

That is the whole point. Going to jail should make your life as miserable as possible. I hope she realises she fcked up and maybe even screwed someone out of a livelihood.

imagine the business got liquidated and all those poor souls now without a job because someone was stealing cash from the business.

You have no idea if you think Pollsmoor will change your life for the better. It's a place of kill or be killed, rape or be raped. You don't come out of there as a person who can properly reintegrate into society.

I don't agree. Yes, you should be miserable 100% and it should not be a walk in the park. But this is Polsmoor... As Oj101 said, it's probably like University for Criminals instead of it being a centre for correction.

I do agree that Polsmoor is not a walk in the park, but I have no sympathy for this, I experienced first hand what white collar crimes can do.

I am a huge advocate of the punishment fitting the crime. Jails are just a wholesale yard that makes it easy to stuff someone into. Putting a thief in with murderers and rapists is such a crude way of dealing with it all.

If you steal financially, you need to repay it financially, with interest. And some form of extra punishment to drive the lesson home. Not full on prison time.

The prospect of prison deters many from doing it in the first place. If prison isn't an option for white collar criminals any more, it will be chaos.
