You make it sound like changing the name of the national airport is a trivial deed with no logical or productive reason behind it.
And this is not the case?

The changes have only just begun though I don't know if they'll continue to introduce them gradually or all at once.

Go For It...who Cares

All at once please, let’s open the festering boil, and get the BS renaming out in the open, and be done with it. Who cares any more? I don’t.

*sigh*

The changes have been happening since pre '94. Airports and Hospitals have been renamed all over the country. Provinces, cities and more have already been renamed. Some places are being renamed again, while there are movements to have some renamed places renamed even further.

Nothing has "just begun" - we're already on round two with some of the changes

I know I'm just saying from now on they might choose to accelerate them rather than being gradual, and yes they've just begun if you compare the number of places renamed and those that still need to be renamed.

Here's an idea. put all the names that the GVT & Associates (Pty) Ltd want to change on a list. Add two check boxes to each ("Yes" and "No"). Call a referendum. Tally the votes for each. Rename or leave names as voted for. End of renaming. Done and Dusted. Total Saving: Billions.

Personally I dont care what the name is. What I care about is that the government is wasting money on renaming something it already wasted money on renaming.

If South Africa was sitting in the position of having a surplus of cash and nothing that important to spend it on then fine, rename everything every couple of years. Until we are in that position though the money should go where its needed and not on PR bull**** such as this.

mod note: poll added
Quick question: Why is there never a "I don't care" option. :)

Had to vote "No" as that's the closest to my position.

Another question: Why in the world are there still roads called Hendrik Verwoerd in just about all the cities? I would have thought he would be the first to be expunged.

No need for a referundum, the people implementing the changes already have the masses' approval based on the elections. That's why we have things like parliament, we can't hold a referendum for every little thing.

That's why I was saying this is just the beginning, a lot still needs to change and faster.

then we have an extremely presumptious government indeed.

fail service delivery. check.
spend billions on changing names irrespective of failing service delivery. check.
assume you have the go ahead on the basis of the vote to do as you please. check.

In any case, spending billions of rands changing names is not a small matter. (little thing as you say)

What is it with you? You want to change everything to erase the "legacy of colonialism and apartheid" but the physical things that where built during this time by the "colonialist" you don't have a problem with.

If the airport with the name Jan Smuts was a symbol of apartheid and colonialism then it still is with the name Oliver Tambo. Its the same airport. If you really want to be rid of the "legacy of colonialism and apartheid" why not just demolish all the things that where built by them and build new "African" things?

If the govt was capable of building new "African" things they propably would have done so.Unfortuonately they're not even capable of building a underground railway, something the UK did 140+ years ago.

I now understand why ppl cheat the tax man without feeling guilty. If our money was spent on making South-Africa a better place instead of appeasing politicians ego's,buying them jets, expensive holidays and systematically erasing my heritage I wouldn't even consider it but now I do.

Is it possible to still care about what this stupid new apartheid government is doing ?

They are exactly the same as the nats and even though theres no sign for blacks only yet angelo said this is only the beginning. Who knows maybe in a while there will be black only areas and the stupid government and people supporting them will still call it a democracy cos its what the people want

But then the rest of the world will finally see this time its not the fault of the evil *shiver* colonials :D

Uhm, that's the whole point of any government. They exist purely to perpetuate themselves. All this talk about service delivery, voting, freedom, etc. doesn't matter.

As long as people keep on appointing "leaders", those "leaders" will keep on exploiting them. Don't expect anything from the State, then you won't be disappointed when nothing happens.

Your arguement is too childish for me to engage.

Convenient...

You'll have to forgive me for not being surprised that you would rather dodge than debate.
