Should government steer clear of all political names when renaming national assets?

Why should black leaders be honoured above white ones who also fought for their country and what they believed in? Men like Jan Smuts fought colonialism and many gave their lives doing so, why should they not be remembered?

Who says Jan Smuts will be forgotten?

Actually Jan Smuts supported the Fagan Commission, which advocated the complete abandonment of all segregation in South Africa.
However, Smuts lost a general election before he could implement the suggestion, and died, just as de jure Apartheid was being implemented.

Jan Smuts may have been too liberal for the era? Perhaps even losing the election because of his ideology and the support of the English in WWII?
One will never know now.
One thing is for certain, he was one fine man and statesman, admired globally.

This is a giant step towards African Renaissance.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Renaissance schmaissance old boy. There is sweet forkol happening in Africa that even vaguely resembles a renaissance! Dream on dream on.

It is perhaps appropriate that the airport is named after an ANC stalwart, being a den of thieves in terms of customs fraud, freight theft and rifled luggage.

It's apartheid's fault.

Why can't we just keep JIA...it's so much more larney (plz don't make this racist)....it's kinda like LAX in the US

Branding South Africa - Your top international airport is part of your external brand - the same way you associate Heathrow, JFK etc. It's on the ticket of every international visitor flying into SA.

“According to BusinessWeek (9 August 2004), South Africa’s ‘external brand equity’ is worth R379.5-billion ($63.6-billion at R6 to the $) – that’s more than IBM ($53.8-billion) and Microsoft ($61.4-billion).”

Now - I wonder - will brand equity go up or down - on a name change to Azania - or OT international?

Well cashing in on the demise of Apartheid by hi-lighting Oliver Tambo... I think brand equity will go up.

So, how many foreigners actually know who he was and what he did?

And still, the question remains, what would a poor guy living in a squater camp with no water or electricity want? A house with running water and lights or to have an airport renamed?

We are not doing it for foreigners, they don't name their institutions to please South Africa, we are doing it for us!

That us is just so exclusionary... Ja, ja, I know - that was then, this is now - (what are you doing now?) 2 wrongs, or however many wrongs do not make a right.

Actually think this is more about brand export to Africa - the Thabo Mbeki renaissance.

Lets take a look at the bigger picture :
Jan Smuts -> Johannesburg International -> Oliver Tambo.

You see ... going from Jan Smuts -> Oliver Tambo would have forced a direct comparison between the 2.
But ... having the intermediary Johannesburg International makes this a non issue really.

See how you can fool the people with good planning.
Slimey and creepy and underhanded.
The worst possible kind of people are running this country.
It's depressing.

Let them do what ever the please, but they cannot escape the FACT that they are a bunch of MAMPARRAS

the word you are looking for is crafty.

anyways in joburg we call call it 'the airport' or if we are going to cape town we call it 'the cape town airport'. i suppose tourists can settle for 'the african airport' considering they prolly think jhb international airport serves the whole continent or something.

does "brand equity" mean anything to you?
Yes and all of the brand equity is derived from calling it Johannesburg International Airport. Change the name and you start again.

See there's a way of coping with these changes, it's not all doom and gloom. :)
