Hi Guys

Please help, I've just started using joomla seems like a fairly easy to use software for webdevelopment. Can you please point me to website where I can download nice free templates, also I am having issues when I upload templates they all seem to be out of shape when uploaded is this because its 1.5 version template being uploaded on 1.6 version of joomla?

Thanks!

Yup 1.5 templates can't just be used with 1.6

If you're set on the look of the 1.5 theme you've found try upgrade it
There are plenty of websites offering free joomla themes, the free themes won't be as nice or as feature laden as the premium ones...

What do you aim to do in the long run with it?

Get yourself artisteer 3.0 and use this to create your own templates any reason why you chose joomla over word press ?

Here are a couple of sites you can look at,

http://www.rockettheme.com/joomla
http://www.joomlajunkie.com/
http://www.joomlapraise.com/
http://www.bestofjoomla.com/

A word of advice, especially with free templates when you're still finding your way around. Make sure there's decent documentation, tutorials or support for the template before you start other wise you'll end up wasting a lot of time starting over.

The free Rocket theme templates are pretty good. There's good documentation and they're easily configurable, especially the newer ones using the Gantry framework.

I got tired of looking for decent templates for Joomla. Solution? Started making my own :D

Artisteer is a great tool to quickly design your own templates, but for more advanced looking stuff you would still need todo some "tweaking" of the template yourself afterwards.

Have you seen Microsoft WebMatrix? It's free and can do the same as Artisteer :)

is joomla use widespread? is there a need in other words. thinking of installing and getting familiar with it.

Definitely. It's the most popular CMS at this stage and has one of the largest open source web application communities as well

2nd most popular if you include wordpress as a CMS... Approximately 12.5% of websites use wordpress and 2.9% use Joomla 1.5% Drupal so yeah there's definitely demand

Yes, but I specifically said CMS. Wordpress is a Blog script, although it can be used as a CMS as well, it's still seen as a blog.

Thus, Joomla is the most used CMS, and Wordpress the most used Blog

I have worked with Joomla and Word press, my view point on both

Word press this is awesome I have not seen a more stable/ reliable cms system

Joomla - You get some really cool components but if you do not know how to secure your website its tickets as hackers find it quite amuzing to hack joomla sites as the ftp directory permissions are normally not right and my swl db with a short password and sql injection is done

The best for me, if a client wants to edit only certaing contents on a page I create a custom website (Not cms) add a free cms management tool to the site via div's and they can easily change contents etc just my 2c though

Its all nice saying Joomla is insecure. I have been a Joomla developer for over 2 years. The security breaches I have experienced usually have to do with a component or module
installed which is insecure. The default joomla install is very secure. The last time I checked wordpress.org has been hacked multiple times.

Wordpress 3.0=< is definitely regarded as a CMS far from just a blog script...

If the ftp directory permissions were wrong on a WordPress site you'd also have lots of fun, both WordPress and Joomla have been hacked due to sql injections in the past as well... Recently WordPress 3.1.3 and 3.2-RC1 both had SQL injection vulnerabilities and Joomla 1.6.3 did as well, although not as recently!

They're both fairly secure, having the source code freely available makes it both more and less secure. If you keep your installations up-to-date you shouldn't really have a problem. Joomla add-ons/components are more powerful than wordpress Plugins and if badly coded they can lead to problems

Yes I do agree, but it all depends on the website owner if he/she knows what they are doing then you can use anyone of the 2 without any issues
