JPEG optimisation?

Set up an automator action to have preview scale the images.

Higher grade - will google.

I have recorded actions in PS to resize them but as I remember it is possible to strip a bunch of stuff out of a typical JPEG to compress the file size further.
If you use save for web in your photoshop action that will strip the EXIF and you can control image size and quality.

Can anyone recommend Mac freeware to make a JPEG as small as possible?

I have used a windows app in the past to strip out unnecessary metadata etc. but unsure how to go about this on the Mac.

You want to make your JPEGS progressive (they tend to be smaller), use a different sub-sampling scheme and of course increase the amount of compression. Paint Shop Pro does that well but there isn't a Mac version.
PS should do it too, though.

Stripping out metadata will remove a few hundred bytes from your file - it's good for small icons but for bigger images it won't be significant.
