Good morning,

Earlier I bought a (Hilux d/cab bakkie)car (yesterday afternoon) at a dealership and drove it home. It doesn't have papers (certificate, registration, niks...) just my ID, drivers permit and the invoice to show to the cops if and when I am/will be stopped. I stay far from the dealership and so they said they will courier the vehicle papers to me this morning. (This purchase was done in the most crappiest way I have ever and will never again purchase a thing...even a chappies bubblegum in my life. I advice that wives be left at home when going to buy a car...with this transaction, she has provided me with grounds for divorce). Now I was told to register myself as a first time buyer/car owner at the traffic department so that the dealership can make an NCO (apparently that can't happen until I am registered) plus after receiving the papers, I will need to do the roadworthy test...i dont know where but the traffic department is my best bet...and that is when I'd be able to register and license the car. i need some advice:
1. Is driving the vehicle without the papers just the invoice and license okay until i get the paperwork sorted? Or should i park the car and pretend it doesn't exist and take a taxi?
2. When the car was bought I was not able to ascertain its mechanical worthiness although on the outside it is immaculate and driving it back was a breeze. Will taking it to a Toyota service centre myself especially without the papers not going to be a challenge?
3. The car has no insurance and no information about service or maintenance. I want to dyno it as soon as i can. Does this also have to wait before the papers are sorted?
4. I dont regret the purchase so far but I am concerned that if i am not careful (because up to this point I have been anything but) this purchase may turn out to be a 'donation'. Should i divorce the wife and become a catholic priest should this turn out to be the latter?

Please advice.

Thanking you in advance

Dono what you on about. Normally you just take the car and the permit. They do the registration on your behalf and send you the new license disk and the plates.

I don't see the issue here.

Did you buy the car cash? Which dodgy dealership was this? As normally the dealership does the following.
1. Not allow you to drive off without insurance confirmation (bought through finance)
2. Do the registration for you (on the road fees)
3. Couriers the disc and sometimes come out and put on the new number plates.

@Lupus
I bought via EFT. Because of the wife, we could not wait for the dealership to sort everything out before we took the car. It was late and we have been consulting the whole day and we were able to engage the dealer at about 15h44. I insisted we stay over and leave when everything was sorted but 'we' couldn't. So the dealer said we can take the car and they will send us the documents and whatever we will need over by courier.
1. They were happy to allow us to drive off.
2. We are going to do the on road fees(on our side) ourselves. This they told us straight. The roadworthy...everything.
3. That they will courier and come fit.

So should the cops pull me over, I can flash the invoice, my drivers licence and I am good?

Yeah this is all on you now, the dealerships only responsibility is the 6 month CPA warranty and making sure you get the necessary papers.

I honestly don't think they would care, are there number plates on the car?

If the vehicle is currently licensed you have nothing to worry about for at least 21 days.

All the other nonsense about needing to register as a first time buyer and what not is utter nonsense. Your person is independent from the car.

Deed of sale to prove it's now yours and the vehicle having a valid license disc is all you need right now.

Nobody looks at the paperwork when booking a service. But you would do well to have it all in order before paying any money towards the vehicle.

Why on earth would you want to dyno it? That is utterly meaningless in this context. The CAR never has insurance. YOU have insurance. Again much like servicing there is no need for paperwork...but doing a dyno means absolutely nothing in the greater context of the vehicle having no history.

Get insurance.

I dont want to get fined. The story is that when we bought the car, they send the assistant to the bank to get the title since the car was not even in their name. So they said they had to get the title and transfer it into their name then send them to us. I contacted them and they said they will send and I should receive them later today. So I guess I will take the taxi so long until I get the papers. I know if 'we' waited, we would not be concerned about getting fined and all. Ok.

All still above board. as long as you have a permit, you're fine. Give them a couple of days to sort the paperwork. You're stressed about nothing tbh :p

I feel sorry for OP and I hope the car is at least mechanically sound, looks like it was not a nice experience, with the wife and the dodgy dealership in the mix.

Good morning,

Now I was told to register myself as a first time buyer/car owner at the traffic department so that the dealership can make an NCO (apparently that can't happen until I am registered) plus after receiving the papers,

Say what?

Ok. Thanks. I feel a bit better. That is until I meet an unscrupulous traffic officer or a seriously-straight-and-narrow-in-line-for-a-promotion traffic officer...who will be looking to torment me. Thank you again.

They said they won't be able to transfer the title to my name if I am not on the traffic database. They said I have to be on the database so they can transfer ownership of the car over to me. I am going to the traffic department in a bit to ascertain this. You learn something new with every experience.

That sounds like BS, when they do the ownership with the document you filled in, boom you're on the database. Though you probably saved a good amount doing it yourself.
