Just bought a used car

Indeed, now I am worried for the guy, I hope there are no unpaid fines linked to that car. And there is the problem, if you are supposed to do the registration yourself you leave the dealership with the car certificate as well as all necessary documents, which OP does not have.

Yup unpaid fines, it being scrapped, it being stolen etc... As they are really giving him some run arounds.

I think the best thing OP could do is to get someone to go with him to the dealer to make sense of the whole story, this does not sound good.

How can you let your wife blackmail you like that, what does she know about cars?.

Ah mara Lupus...honestly though I think I think I ought to know more than I do now. I am about to give you guys feedback about what transpired since my last response. As for the wife, she loves the car and and I also do too. She is panicky now because things are more 'complex'. I will explain in a few minutes...this phone does not type so good.
 
I went to the traffic dept to do the 'BS' (register as a new vehicle owner so the car can be transferred into my name) and they wanted proof of ownership which i dont have as yet (the invoice i have that they said i should flash at the cops is BS, I must have with at all times, reputable proof of ownership). I was asked who the owner of the vehicle was and I replied at the moment, the company that sold me the car. They asked me what proof do i have of that and i produced the invoice. They said that it is invalid as proof of ownership because it merely states that i bought a car but that car could be any car. Because the only authorized or recognized proof of ownership must have importantly ownership certificate (which i am still to be in possession of) And even if the name of the certificate is the name of the company that sold me the car, the invoice will connect me to the car therefor constituting valid proof of ownership. Worse the invoice that has the vehicle details is handwritten thus I could have organized it myself. And upon further perusal of the invoice, they adviced that i have apparently bought the car 'voetstoot'. I am beside myself and i blame the wife.

What is the dealer saying? Where is the car registration certificate? I hope you realise you have a problem on your hands. Go to the dealer and ask for the certificate. You might be driving someone's stolen car for all you know.

No legit "dealership" will give you a hand-written invoice as proof of purchase.
No papers, no service book and by what I read no license disk in the window, I fear the worst for the OP.

Some of it is concerning and some it if might not be such a big deal.
It sounds like you live quite far from the dealership so that probably explains the reasoning for them wanting to send you the papers.
They probably had either just settled or still needed to settle the outstanding amount on it to get the original papers which they need to transfer into their name.
Once that is done you can have it transferred into yours and you will then get a license disk and probably a new registration number.
Before you do anything else get insurance. All you need is the make/model and vin numbers do that.

Your next step is to get hold of the dealership and find out where your papers are, once you have the original logbook in your possession then you can go back to the licensing department and get everything sorted out.

The only concerning part is the dealership sounds dodgy as heck, I hope its an established business and not a "dealership"

Unless something was lost in the dealer relaying the message to him it does not make any sense.

Ok. Went to the dealership on saturday and left the car there. They said they will have sort everything (papers, service and all) tomorrow morning. I hope i will get it back by the end of the day tomorrow or tuesday morning latest.

i would like to take a moment and relate what happened between after coming back from the traffic department and delivering the car back to the dealership.

In the morning after coming from the traffic department, I tried to open that car's bonnet to check water and motor oil but the bonnet opening switch would not open the bonnet apparently the cable that opens the bonnet was slack/not taut enough so I could not access the hood/engine bay. I was concerned (honestly speaking my knowledge of cars is that of a novice though I understand that the engine requires lubrication (so the metal does not grind against metal and not exceed certain temperatures inside as it works) and water (so to stay within certain temperatures and whatnot) to be topped up from time to time. So because of that and also mainly since the car didnt have any service information whatsoever...I decided to take it to the local toyota dealership so they can inspect it for me (I didnt mind paying), so i got there found this sales oke and I related to him my story, he was not impressed with the everything especially the wife since it was her fault overall so he told me that they can inspect the car for me but the dealership where I bought the car from will have to foot to the bill and so he called the dealership where I bought the car and they called my wife and complained to her why I took the car to Toyota and also mentioned that they gave us a discount...he he he...that right there was chief motivation to hurry up and take the car back and do things properly this time because it was very clear now that we had fu%#ed up big time with this people. And the toyota guy told me that I should try to resolve this as soon as possible preferably before 7 days after purchase was up. That afternoon I took the car and drove it back and on the road, the orange engine ight came on and the car (engine)switched off and I safely parked it off the road and since I could not open the bonnet there was no way of finding out what was wrong. So I called the dealership and told them of this. They responded that at 17h00 they are closing and if I am not there by then I wont find them. (Clearly I supported the wrong business). And so I organized a tow truck. They came and were able to open the bonnet of the car and found out that there was no oil in the engine. They organized me some and poured it in and waited for a moment and started te bakkie but it refused to start. They checked the pump, the fuse box and wanted to open the engine cover but I refused to let them do that (they wanted to check the spark plugs since everthing else seemed to be fine but the car just didnt want to ignite...and also it was raining heavily so they were thinking water must have been tampering with the firing system) in case the dealership would use that as a shield to wiggle out of sorting this mess out. So since it was late, I arranged with the tow guys to come and tow me the next morning so I could get the car to the dealership in time so they can sort it out. Fortunately I had family in the area and I stayed over for the night and the next morning the tow guys came and put the car on a trailer and towed it to the dealership. We however got there late they had closed for the day but otherwise they were waiting for us regardless (That was a plus for them...they were probably feeling guilty). They assured me (verbally) when I arrived that they will take it to the workshop tomorrow (monday) morning and will sort everything out...even the papers. I left it there with them and am now back home and will see how tomorrow pans out. My uncles are furious with me but more especially my wife for getting me into this mess and also not letting them know we are buying a car as they'd have helped us avoid all of this and moreover for being as they put it 'dangeroulsy careless'. I tried to defend my wife but the truth is like a sore thumb you know.

i will try and post a pic of the car when we are done so you could see what exactly led me down this road. Thank you all for your responses and advice, it really helped entrench awareness and lower my worries and panics. You know even when you are in k&k and there is some information and ways to help you get out and wash off, it is not such a dire situation. This was what it was like for me. It isnt over yet but i am hopeful it will turn out fine.

The car had this when I drove it off the lot first time:
1. One key
2. A piece of paper stuck on the back window with a registration number in big bold font, with dates 2018-03-19 and 2018-04-09 and the car's chassis number on it. (Apprently that allows me to drive the car on the road for 21 days as its registration/licensing is sorted out.
3. No service book, no manual and no papers (official-looking) that talks about the car...as in name, model, make, etc but advice by the salesman at the dealership where I bought the car to take it to Toyota to find inforrmation about its service history. And apparently this was just said to us so we could complete the transaction and drive it off.
4. A handwritten invoice with the dealership's letterhead with the car details on it (Chassis number, Engine number, Registration plates details), the amount the car was bought for plus additional items purchased (excaliber accessories) and 3 declarations below that which stated that I understand the agreement (I sort of did but in reality I didnt), information about the car was explained to accepted by me (which is not true nothing anout the car was explained to me...faults, service information and they were not even sure of the model number to give you a picture of how much information was churned out about that on that note) and lastly that If I paid the window price, they will fix whatever should go wrong and if I ask for discount, I will fix it myself. plus a copy of the business registration details and a copy of the dealership owner's ID.

We did a test drive around the block or two and perfomance-wise it was very very good...managed to even get it to 182 km/h. That right there was the last nail that made everything to go the way it went. Regardless it is a lesson learned especially for my wife. She is quiet now. And promises never to interfere in such crucial matters again. I think she learned her lesson.

Now, when I ggo to take back the car, what exactly should I come back with in order to have truly put this nightmare away (except for the money should things go bad and I get my money back and dont back with that very car)?

Yes. (When we bought the car) They said they were still going to settle the car and then have it registered in their name before they can send us the papers. The problem was that they said I should register myself with the department of traffic so they could find me easily when transferring (since I was a first time car owner), which was some serious cow-dung (i later found out after it was echoed in the forum also as BS). The whole traffic department stood still when I went in to 'register in their database'...they were very very certain i had been scammed and related some gruesome stories of other people who had come to them about things like this and buying dodgy and from dodgy 'dealerships'. They said I should allow them to check it on their system...actually they insisted but I implored them to let me resolve it all by taking it back therefore not inconveniencing me...thank goodness the traffic officers are human, had they been robots, I'd be truly fs&%ed.

What I knew for sure was that, I could not buy anything for the car...canopy, tracker, tyres (because the one rear tyre was slightly worn out), tanneu (however the hell it is spelled) cover and even insurance until I had the papers proving me as the owner or at least the dealership but then I had absolutely ziltch. Hopefully by tomorrow Id have all this behind me. Will keep you lot in the loop.
