Guys

Doing first kara run tonight!
Anyone got any tips/helpers/ways not to die?

Go here http://www.wowwiki.com/Karazhan, and read up the Boss strategies -in detail- (look at the bottom of the page under "encounters", each boss got their own page) . It's imperative to know how the bosses/encounters work, otherwise you will die over and over and over and never know why.

Depending on your group experience, you probably won't get further than Curator in an evening session. So read up on the following bosses for the first run :
Attumen
Moroes
Maiden
Opera event [this is 3 events, you will get 1 of the 3 at random, so will have to read up all 3]
Curator

Also get an addon like Big Wigs which provides warnings about the "boss phases" and "special attacks incoming". The whole catch with Kara is basically knowing when and what each boss will be doing.

Simple example (easiest fight): Your first boss will be Attumen. It starts with the Horse [Midnight], which you damage till like 95% [read that up] , Phase 2 then Attumen himself appears. So then you got both the Horse -and- Attumen to deal with seperately. Once the Horse OR Attumen is say at 25% [go read that up again] , Attumen climbs on his horse for phase 3 and do some wild charging/swiping attacks from on top of the horse.

If you don't know this will happen, you will wipe on phase 2..because your tank will probably be busy with the Horse and then the "Real" boss appears and wipes your healers....so typically you put the off-tank on the horse while the main tank stands arond waiting for the real boss etc etc.....and this is the easiest encounter....

Nickd if you're running with a guild thats got Kara clear then it's a bit hard to give you specific tips for everything but there goes.

Attumen: When you engage Midnight and Attumen spawns stay away from him. Be very careful you don't do any kind of AoE and hit him. Tanks can sometimes be a bit slow to pick him up.

Moroes: When you pull Moroes don't run in too quickly because if one of the guys is the guy with the Whirlwind it can lead to dead melee. Rather wait till the mobs have been seperated

Maiden: Don't be afraid to run out of her Holy Fire and bandage if necessary.

Curator: Kill his adds first and quickly as they spawn. When he Evocates always kill that last add before you start hitting him.

Shade of Aran: Be very very careful to stop moving before he finished casting the Flame Wreath. I've had it happen before where i thought i'd stopped and i still triggered the Flame. It wasn't pretty.

Illhoof: Smack the chained player ASAP. It's very important.

Netherspite: If you're not assigned to a beam then stay very clear of it. Also watch the ground for those Black holes coz they pwn.

Nightbane: Never ever stand in the middle of the terrace. Keep either left or right. If you're melee stay away from the front of NB coz he cleaves you for a ton. Also stay away from his tail as it hits for a middling amount and leaves a DOT that will give you headaches. If you melee gets a charred earth then just run through NB and start hitting him from the other side. you'll be ok.

Chess:nothing. It's loot in a chest and u take it. End of fight.

Prince: Be very careful of your health. When he hits you with that spell that weakens you run like the wind behind cover if u melee. Don't wait for him to start casting Shadow Nova because the timer can be wrong.

Here some pointers we give to new raiders regarding Attumen. Firstly, the tank that picks up Attumen should be a warrior so that he can disarm Attumen. When he mounts midnight only the tanks stand in front of him, the rest of the guys stand on top of each other right on Midnights ass. EVERYBODY including hunters and healers or else Midnight will bolt to whoever is standing away from him and a wipe will follow.

I remember those days :p

hugging midnight was fun, /yawn fight for a hunter

Thanks to the upcoming Weapon badge rewards it's worth running Kara even if u in BT.
I'm already stocking up.

There's been no info on the rewards apart from the fact that they're BT Quality.

Whether it will make the final cut for 2.4 remains to be seen. Worst case scenario they're adding more Badge Rewards so even if no weapons get added there still might be some good items.
Already some of the badge rewards are best in slot items.

**** guys we wiped so badly last night in kara, didnt even make the first boss! pretty pathetic IMHO.
3 people left and thats what cooked our goose! does that happen often there, people just up and leaving in the middle of it all?

I was peaking at around 700dps, and had top dmg by around 200k, is this good enough for kara?

O.O

Was it a guild run or a Pug group ?

Normally if you wipe like that you have the wrong group setup, really undergeared people, someone who doesn't know what to mark or who should cc what.

What was you group makeup ?

Normally when we run it with a group setup something from below:
1 x Druid Tank (MT) - Way overgeared for kara :) . Currently tank in SSC & TK
1 x War/Pala (OT)
1/2 x Priest - Holy
0/1/2 x Pala/Shaman/Druid - heal spec
1/2 x Warlocks
1/2 x Rogues
0/1 x Huntard
0/1/2 x Mage

2 Priests is nice because you get 2 shackles :). This makes a lot of the content fairly easy.

On Sylvanas (Alliance) we do runs for SA only people. Busy trying to get the SA guys we know geared up. Normally we overgear on 8 people and then take 2 noobs.

700 DPS on your first Kara is nothing at all to be ashamed of. Very nice.

What Guild was it Nickd?

A guild called "Avarice" on Bloodhoof, we've only just started raiding, i am only saffer in the guild but its a very nice bunch of people.
In all honesty some of the guildies didnt pitch so we were 6 guildies and 3 randoms.

We had:

1 x Warrior MT
1 x Druid OT
1 x Pala DPS
2 x Lock
1 x Druid Healer
2 x Mage
1 x Priest

one of the mages bailed after first wipe, but her dmg was shyte anyway so we didnt really feel it.
We had major problems with groups of 4 or more mobs.

Were you 1 short ?

Also seems like you were only 2 x healers which for someone new to kara is to little.

What was your gear on the Druid OT ? and on the War MT ?

Heh, depends on how close the guild is (i'm guessing your guild isn't close buddies which you can phone up and go "wtf where did you go"). Often, yes people up and leave like that (in a close guild it's mostly connections that dies though). The most important thing to get off to a good start is gear...just going straight from your blues/greens into kara is BAD. Just having the classes is not good enough, at minimum at least try to be wearing a full set of PvP gear aka "welfare epics" as it's the easiest to get [those you buy with honor from the battlegrounds] .

Go to this site and see if your group measured up [min requirements for kara], especially check if you measure up. I had to spend a solid month just to meet the mimimum requirements for my class [even though i was kara-attuned and cleared all the normal instances]
http://www.worldofmatticus.com/2007/11/08/minimum-class-stat-requirements-for-karazhan/

PS: It's a guideline, you won't always be able to make those specs, but you should get very close before attempting Kara.

If they did, then people did not do what they are suppose to do, or the leader did not give proper instructions. You MUST communicate, just running in and treating it like an instance [even on trash] won't get you far.

Also if people bail, don't bother trying to 8-man or 9-man it, you are wasting your time, get a replacement before moving on...otherwise you're just going get frustrated and then tempers fly and so on.

And lastly, in all these serious instances, CC is the key. If someone can CC something, then do it. NEVER try to fight all the mobs at the same time [even if it's only 2 mobs] . Our Kara runs we almost ALWAYS fight one mob at a time , the others are always CC'ed or offtanked (CC = crowd controlling, i.e priests should shackle, hunters should trap , mages should polymorph, rogues should sap).

If the maintank is tanking 2 mobs, while you have a rogue, mage, priest and hunter and none used their CC'ing abilities...then don't be surprised if you wipe. I'm pretty sure what probably happened was, Main Tank took on say 2 mobs and they hit so hard that healers can't keep up...he dies = wipe OR Main Tank could only take on 1 mob, the other 1 running straight to the nearest clothie [healer] and one-shot-kill them...again no healing and tank dies = wipe again.

Yeah thats a little thin on the healer side.

We do Kara with 2 Healers but thats coz they're wearing Tier 5 and we're there for badges.

Yeah on our runs , we can easily do it with 2 healers. Normally take a 3rd noob that we are gearing.

Even when we do our runs ( Most guys are in T5 ) we insist people are on Vent and we apply similar rules to when we are raiding 25man although more relaxed. The quickest way to wipe is to assume and do no communication. Besides anything having everyone on vent is nice and adds to the atmosphere with jokes , insults etc between friends.

One of the last runs was funny. Were about to do maiden so was busy assigning pillars to the new guys. All I heard was a "oh ****" from our OT. he had decided to go look at the size of her tits :) and got to close. Our rogue started running to the entrance to reset and our hunter noob FD'd ( I was lol'ing ) but turned round once he saw we had got her back to the tanking spot and were busy owning her anyway. Without comms it would have been a wipe and expensive repair later.

What put me off maiden was her calves ... they could strangle a blue whale without her blinking an eye ...

yeah we were 1 short
and CC was an issue, only 1 shackle and mages werent doing buggerall
I have 11k HP, 8k mana and +700 dmg so i think i am geared OK, and i suppose i need crit gear more than res gear for PVE?

Mages cant CC in most of kara

pretty much everything is Undead

What you needed for the 4 x pulls.

1xShackle
1xTrap
1xMT
1xOT

MT->trap->OT->shackle
Just depends on your DPS and gear quality.
