Karmic impressions

Try and disable the automatic startup of power management daemon:
System->Preferences->Startup applications
Uncheck "Power Manager".

Then reboot (you said that works) and then try to shutdown again.

I had an issue on a previous computer where it would do the same kind of thing. Would reboot, but not shutdown. This solved the problem.

Thanks. Will give it a go.

Did a network upgrade on the wife's PC and it did not go smooth sailing. Nothing broke, but I had to fiddle a bit to get it to upgrade.

* Remove all third party software sources
* Uninstalled a few apps that were not supported in 9.10 before the upgrade went any further (Acroread from Adobe for one)
* After upgrade checked the sources again and did a partial upgrade again to finish everything

Seems like it is working 100% now, nice eyecandy.

Linouser, do you have a log to support and strengthen you case?

Have a peek in /var/log/ to see if there is a network or pppoe log file that might shed some light on the problem and add it to the bug report.

I took a look but there is nothing:confused:

Uploaded the daemon log! However we need as many people as possible to report the bug. We need it fixed!

9.10 runs quite a bit faster than 9.04, but it seems that I've lost ACPI support. If I try to boot without the acpi=off flag, the PC just gives me a black screen.

Specs:

Intel T2300 @ 1.66GHz
Intel 945GM chipset (GMA 950 graphics; ICH7-M)
Intel 3945ABG
4GB DDR2-800
Marvell Yukon 88E8055 Gigabit ethernet (using the Sky2 driver)

A few new things I noticed that I'm happy about....

Option to spin down disks now under power management and it actually works as well :)
Disc utility seems nice but I still cannot comment on if it works well.
The new janitor is much better
The newer Mythtv which not only looks better but uses less CPU with the new VDPAU profile has me very satisfied.

Just a shame about the DSL fault using network manager but I downgraded to an older version for now.
Edit:
PPPoE works now(somewhat) after adding this...

Skrew this.. i gave up with the GMA500 driver support crap.. Waiting for the Dell 11z to become available.. :P

Up and running with Ubuntu 9.10 on Acer Aspire One A110L...

I'm very impressed so far. Either they did some SERIOUS optimisations or the fixed Intel driver for GMA 950 works wonders... Haven't had any of the greyed out screens I used to get every so often.

Everything works out the box except for fan control, which was literally 10 seconds to fix.

I have the same netbook. Used to have Ubuntu 9.04, then switched to Windows 7. Very tempted to try out Ubuntu 9.10.

What's the fan control issue?

Same as previous versions... Without dmidecode and the acerfand script, fan is not monitored: runs continuously.

With the script, it's awesome... Fan is regulated and netbook is much quieter.

I updated 9.04, downloaded the 9.10 Alternate CD, mounted the ISO and ran the upgrade. It still needed to download 900Mb, perhaps due to all the extra apps I use, who knows. My cap ran out about 80% through the download, so I connected to a certain '10Gb trial account" (thanks WA!!!) and it resumed downloading from there. Impressive.

The upgrade went smoothly enough, although my XFi wasn't set as the default sound, which I had configured it as under Jaunty. Simply re-enabled it and everything was back to normal.

I'm still facing an issue with pppoe from Jaunty, which was caused by removing a dedicated NIC. That aside, Karmic looks and feels awesome.

Cool. Can you give me some steps on how to do it?

I wiped Windows 7 last night and installed 9.10. Had a quick look, so far not much different than 9.04?

What's the difference between the normal Desktop version and the Alternate version?

As I understand, the alternate cd can be used on systems that don't have internet access. Although, I just did a massive 9.0Mb update to karmic, after installing the desktop cd on Friday, so maybe I am wrong?.

If you connect using PPPoE connection now, one is unable to access the machine via the network.

Loaded it and been grinning ever since.

the intel driver issues are fixed so I dont get logged out if I accidently move something over a Video. The hibernate and resume time is wonderful and works smoothly. All drivers installed perfectly and compiz works right out of the box. Previously I couldnt even watch movies without the danger of a crash. Now I can play 3 different movies while spining the desktop cube and not so much as a hitch. Perfect!

Interface seems more responsive, firefox doesnt lag when I scroll down, the only interface issue I still have is the stupid notifications. You hover over them and they go transparent. Why? I can't click them, close them, do anything with them. The need to rethink the behaviour there.

The new software centre is brilliant. I love that I can start installations so long while I keep browsing through the lists. Will also be better for new users.

Empathy seems much more responsive than Pidgin which hung a lot with me.

Disk Utility works well, I wont miss Gparted. Only thing they don't tell you is that ntfsprogs and ntfs-config aren't installed by default so you need to load those to work create and manage ntfs partitions.

The new Bluetooth app is also wonderful! About time!

All and all a much smoother experience than Jaunty. I love it to bits

Only sad part is that Remastersys hasn't released for Karmic yet so I can't do a distro for my Home PC. Should be out in a week or so.

Go Ubuntu!

Yeah that's normal, even jaunty was that way AFAIK that's the feature I like about it, allows my router to use one account and I can connect using another account and not cap the routers account. If you need both then pppoeconf will be the other option I think.

Personally it feels sluggish, and they should include ratings, but it's a good start.

It is a bit sluggish yes, especially the moment you add another thing to the install list but given the extra functionality I do not mind it that much.

Hopefully they will keep improving on it. Besides, pros would rather use apt-get and new users won't complain that much.

Follow the instructions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne110L

Note that it won't auto-load from /etc/rc.local

But they give you links to a fix (unless you want to come up with your own fix).

Fairly straightforward: make sure dmidecode is installed (default), then download the scripts and run them.
