Rooigevaar’s wife, Kathleen Bartels, died suddenly this week. Our thoughts are with Ronald (Rooigevaar).

From the Star newspaper: http://www.iol.co.za/star/top-subeditor-bartels-dies-at-38-1.1120967

KATHLEEN Bartels, a freelance sub-editor on the IP, has died after a suspected aneurysm resulting in cardiac arrest.

The 40-year-old mother of two had worked for The Star part-time for the last seven years.

Bartels, who held an Honours degree in Publishing Studies from Wits University, was an accomplished copywriter and editor. She co-managed Wordsmiths, a specialist writing and editing company with her father, Owen Hendry.

Apart from sub-editing on The Star, she was the editing force behind several well-known books of non-fiction, and the ghost writer, editor and proof reader of works in a variety of genres. At Wordsmiths, she headed a team of former journalists, news editors, accredited PR professionals and published authors who wrote everything from reports to media releases for clients who ranged from NGOs to corporations, advertising, PR agencies and government departments.

The Star’s editor, Moegsien Williams, paid tribute to Bartels. “She was a lovely warm person and a consummate professional who will be missed by the staff of The Star and Independent Newspapers.”
She is survived by her husband, two children and her parents. The funeral will be at 11am on Wednesday, 24th August 2011 at the Bryanston Methodist Church.
