Keeping cool at night

How are you guys leaving your windows open?

If my window is not closed by 8PM, I have 10 mosquitoes in my room, colonizing the one corner of my ceiling.

Those bottles that you plug in, Mortein, Raid etc work for me. I have it permanently plugged in. Switch on at night, off in the morning. I sleep with windows open and not a mozzie comes in. Just buy refills once a month. That is repellent.

If you want to prevent the problem it also helps to clear your yard of anything that holds stagnant water, buckets and old flower pots that have water standing in them.

If you have a fountain or Jojo, chuck half a cup of paraffin in, it will float at the top and prevent the buggers from breeding. You'll have to do this every once in a while.

This will reduce their population quite a bit but if you live near a stream or river then not much else you can do.

Bottom line I highly recommend the plug in liquid electric gizmos.

:( If your skin tends to be a bit sensitive / dry, the aircon at work will be dehydrating it even more. Try extra moisturiser on skin exposed to the office air, and put more on when you feel the itchy stuff starting - it helped me.
Thank you! I have been countering the aircon lately. I leave my window open and close my vent - helped a lot. I must carry extra moisturiser! and prednisone tablets :-) If your doc will give you a bit extra, those work like a bomb!

This is 100% effective for me. Only thing I needed to do was use an extension cord and place the unit on the open window frame so that the breeze distributes the repellent.

!

So here is a question . What about central air-conditioning? I've seen it at some homes. Seems to work a treat for both summer and winter. Other questions I have now is also how many batteries would I need if I wanted to run off solar. I assume a central Aircon would be more energy efficient than installing one in each room?
ducted aircon is the way to go, especially if you are considering purchasing aircon units for two or more rooms.
it is more energy efficient and totally silent - everywhere inside your home is the same temperature.

to have ducted airconditioning work properly it needs to run 24hrs, not being turned on and off.
many do not understand this, but once the selected temperature is reached the compressor with only switch on and off for short periods to maintain that temperature.
ppl often switch the aircon off when they feel cool and think the room is cool enough - this is the worst thing to do.
when you turn the aircon back on, it has to work like a trojan to bring down the ambient temperature of the room, and everything in it - your electricity costs will go thru the roof.
think of this a little like using cruise control in a car to maintain 120km/h instead of switching off the motor at that speed, then switching back on and having to accelerate when your speed drops down to 80.

Thanks for the feedback. Very good to know. May go an ask for a quote for ducted Aircon in my home. Since it's a single story should be easy to do ... Is it worth doing bathrooms or are the outlets normally never put in those rooms - guess could spread black mold etc that way

Mine has been on permanently since the 21st since I stopped work for the holidays. Don't even switch it off to refill the water tank. Just turn off misting function .... Refill and then turn must on again. Hope the motor does not burn out. Lol
SO bought one of these -= really worth it. Putting the water in makes a huge difference.

They should make a model where you can connect it to a tap instead of having to refill the tank every few hours :)
I could get behind that - but then we would have to sit in the kitchen or bathroom. They should make a bigger tank - that is for sure. Or be able to connect to a large water bottle.

16? which brand? All 3 of our samsung A/C's have 18 as minimum. At night, 18 gets very cold, especially for our little boy - 20 seems good for us here.

Jet Air. Last couple of days, did 16. Usually maybe 18-20

connect the tank to your hosepipe and install a toilet cistern to keep the water container filled up

So I was doing some checks for centralised airconditioning ... I guess I may give it a miss ... costs look astronomical. For my 320sqm home, I would need approx a 150,000 BTU aircon.

https://www.acsuperstore.co.za/solar-air-conditioning << this is a solution that could be run off grid - but I am thinking rather spend the money on a proper solar off-grid system with batteries, etc and ensure it can run the AC's too.

http://www.climatesolutions.co.za/centralairconditioning.html << These guys charge approx R120K for 200sqm. Like that is is iOT driven, etc ... perhaps could do some interesting things in hass.io ... but as @Grant mentioned earlier, best is to keep it running on all the time...
