Kindle II the most popular e-reader in SA

sounds much harder than just having my books borrowed. or my drm-less stuff copied :D arrrgghhhhh

What about making offline back-ups? and how many times can you re-download it?
 
You can have the same book on 5 devices and all read it at the same time so in that way its better than print ! You can download it as many times as you want. But it is encoded for each device.

If you lend a book to someone you cannot read it yourself.... if you copy your drm-less stuff then its not lending its giving.

Got to agree with the other posters... I used to read on my cellphone and bought a Sony Pocket Edition reader. E-Ink is amazing - I'll never go back!

Hi, Thanks for the 311 tip. Couldn't figure out why my Kindle which arrived yesterday (4 days after placing the order) would not connect but now all is well. Must load books tonight so that I've got lots to read whilst in Botswana for 8 days.:)

One thing that is a problem for South African's is that the Kindle doesn't always pick the best cellular network for your area. However if you go to Settings and enter 311 on the keyboard it will bring up the available GSM networks and you can then pick a default like Vodacom if that that has the strongest signal. Saves a lot of frustration when your Kindle arrives with the default set to a nonsense network that doesn't exist.

no ways. read up on e-ink dude. there is no way in hell smartphone LCD is better for your eyes or more comfortable, or better with power management.

Yip, can get Sony and other readers here - call me biased I agree that the Kindle is the only worthwhile reader ;) Ok, the Nook ain't bad either but I still prefer the Kindle :D
 
Saying the Kindle is the only worthwile, value for money ebook reader is just wrong. The Sony readers and other alternatives can be had with a bit of effort and many of them offer better performance than the Kindle - the biggest being ePub support.

Hmmm... ja, sorry, bot don't agree 100%. Look at the sales figures - Kindle blows everyone else out the water - they must be doing something right otherwise people wouldn't buy them.
Same with an iPhone for example - ppl tend to complain about little things like not being able to send songs etc over bluetooth but then again look at the sales figures - one of the best selling phones in the world - means they doing something right...
 
What sales figures? Amazon doesn't, and to date hasn't released any sales figures for the Kindle. No concrete numbers at all. They did send out press releases lauding record sales, but a undefined increase on an undefined number of sales are meaningless. In the US the Kindle is big, not so much the rest of the world.
