Kindle - I'm converted

Wonder if there will ever be a public kindle library like you have for paper books? Somehow I doubt it.

Don't think there will be libraries in the future. Everyone will be carrying one around in their pocket. Great kindle app on the ipad too.

That research version is still about two years away, according to E Ink, but the company is planning to release a version of color screen later this year...
That article was written in May last year, and I stand under correction, but no colour e-ink device is anywhere near production yet. The folks on kindleboards would definitely have mentioned it.

I won't be surprised if the color e-ink thing is going to die a silent death, there's already rumour that Amazon is bringing out a LCD tablet next:

We've got a pretty good inkling that it's coming -- the big question is when will Amazon finally ship an LCD tablet. According to DigiTimes, and its occasionally trusty sources at upstream component makers, when is defined by the second half of 2011. What's more, the media tablet will feature a Fringe Field Switching LCD display and touch panel from Amazon fave E Ink Holdings, a company better known for the technology behind the Kindle's EPD e-paper displays. According to DigiTimes, Quanta has received the manufacturing honors with production expected to peak at about 700,000 - 800,000 units per month. So yeah, the Amazon Kindle tablet won't be sporting a Mirasol display according to this gossip. Then again, it's only gossip so anything goes.

I've decided to support eBooks and buying them and not to just download everything illegally off the internet for free (yes you can do this with torrents). I have however decided that it's morally not wrong to download (without paying) the books that I already have in paper book form. Especially hardbacks are heavy and awkward to hold so I prefer having them on my Kindle.

I'm actually planning on replacing mine with the newer generation one sometime in the not too distant future.

The current gen Kindle is for me already a classic device and even with newer iteration I doubt i will feel the need to upgrade like one feels with an iPad, it will always feel right to me being an ebook reader with the added bonus of 3G :)

The only time I see myself likely to upgrade is to buy a larger version. I'm still in two minds about that, though. The 6" is so mobile, while a DX should be much better for PDFs.

Loving the K3 to bits! It's (ahem) rekindled my interest in reading unbelievably. Amazon deserves all the kudo's for the ease of use of reading and acquiring new material.

The kindle uses a standard mini-USB port and any charger that have such a port should be able to charge your Kindle. Case in point : Blackberry phone charger will charge your kindle (that's how i charged mine the last year). most likely any phone that uses a standard mini-usb port's charger would work.

And yes you can read while charging, as long as your Kindle have enough power to start up...

It's a micro usb connection. There's a physical difference between mini usb and micro usb. Wiki

Yea sorry, i get confused between the two. Point is, it is a standard type of USB port and you should be able to get generic chargers / phone chargers / car chargers for the Kindle.

Although it is true about the Kindle's charger, I've found that if you let it run REALLY flat, you sometimes need the Kindle charger to get it online again. It is the ONLY charger that somehow manages this (I know, doesn't make sense).

So don't throw away your Kindle charger ever!

Especially as Amazon won't sell you a new one if you live in sunny SA
