Kindle - I'm converted

Cool device but I'd go for an Android tablet. Even a low powered one would be able to surf in colour additional to just reading books.

I'm keen to get it, but like skimread, I have pdfs of a good hundred books. Anyway to read them on the kindle?

Oh, and how does shipping to SA work? I tried ordering it now in Amazon USA, and they say they can't deliver to my address?

You can also consider converting your PDFs to Kindle format, which i would think would read much better. There is a few tools out there, here's one : http://www.pdftokindle.com/

Doesn't really work. I haven't tried the link you mention, but the ones I have tried converted each line of text into a paragraph. This is even more painful to read than the PDF, unless you put a huge amount of work into it to get the text flowing. Personally, I'd rather buy a tablet if my primary source of reading material was PDF - their software can do the job much better than that on the Kindle.

Use Calibre to convert. It works well for normal novel type documents, but you will have to learn a few command line tricks to sort out paragraphs, pagination etc. if Calibre's first try isn't very successful. Fortunately there are many guides/forums on the net to help. With a little bit of practice I've generally managed to get fairly decent conversion results.

There is an international link you must click on. I ordered another one last week.

How much is a Kindle in SA these days? And how hard is it to get the ebooks for it?
I paid around R1,300 each directly from Amazon (only way to go) including shipping. Had no problem getting them in SA took 5 days from date of order

Buying books from Amazon is really easy and there are plenty free books running wild on the webz if you spend a bit of time looking. There are some legit/legal sites with all the classics and any other books no longer under copyright (like Project Gutenberg & MobiReader) as well as a few rogue sites with pirated books
Personally I think an author is due payment for the work they have done, so most of my books come directly from Amazon.

Run 2 kindle's from one Amazon account so any books we buy are delivered to both devices.

I've just paid R3240 for the Kindle DX.

That seems a little overpriced , you can almost buy an iPad for that price.....

I also thought the DX is outdated ? [as in going obsolete and to be replaced]

Got the normal Kindle, but the girlfriend has taken over.
Getting this one because I want a bigger page and want to read pdf's properly.

An E-Reader and lcd Tablet are chalk and cheese.

All the book nerds in one neat thread. If this were high school I'd be eating your lunch.

Barnes and Nobles' Nook supports color so it will just be a matter of time before the next Kindle does too. I'll hold out if color is an issue.
