Kindle on Gumtree

There's no knock off version of the kindle in SA right?

Why not just buy it direct from Amazon ? - its $89 - even with VAT and all the rest the price should be in the same range ?

As far as I know, they have a dispatch center in Cape Town (could be wrong) so delivery would not take more than a couple of days.

The Amazon price is $69 is with advertising - $89 without - for the model shown in the .jpgs.

It is the model without 3G, so you will need wi-fi access.

Personally I would purchase direct from Amazon.

I checked it out but with shipping it worked out to R1200. Or is there a cheaper way of doing it?

Still cheaper that those Gumtree ads and from a legit source.

The Kindle that I have on loan is from someone who bought it through his parents address in the states and so it was cheaper. Probably going to buy another one next year when they visit from the states.

Its possible that those on Gumtree are the ad-supported ones bought in the states for $79 dollars and then shipped here themselves as a "gift". Call the sellers to see if they are the ad-supported (special offers) ones.

I bought the Kindle Paperwhite from wantitall and it was delivered within 3 days:http://www.wantitall.co.za/Electron...ght-Wi-Fi-Includes-Special-Offers__B007OZNZG0

The ads are not intrusive, I don't even notice them.

Got my wife the special offers one a year ago, we actually like the ads as she gets a new screensaver ad each day and the banner on the main menu is not taking up much space. We have even managed to buy some of those offers if they are not region based.

Unless Amazon have changed their policy, they will not deliver an ad-supported Kindle outside the US and a couple of other areas (SA is not included). Some local resellers are buying the ad-supported units in bulk and reselling them here, thus achieving a lower price. Technically these are therefore 'grey' units, but the whole issue is itself a 'grey' one!!!

If you're referring to the new Kindle Paperwhite, then in fact it is not a 'backlight' but a frontlight, and there's a world of difference! Miniature LEDs around the screen bezel illuminate the text from the front, and the unit still has the proper e-ink screen, thus between them achieving ideal and non-tiring reading conditions.

All the very cheapie so-called 'e-readers' in fact have traditional backlit LCD screens, with the attendant eye-fatigue problems.

I'd rather buy from someone on bidorbuy frankly .. you may be lucky on gumtree but I dunno the risk wouldn't be worth it or me.

1) It's a walk-in shop advertising its wares. Really doesn't seem risky to me.
2) Risk of scam on Gumtree vs risk of scam on BoB = about the same.
