Having read through the threads on the forum I still have a question for those of you that own one

I am specifically interested in the Kindle 3G+Wi-fi :D

The cover - only seems to be available via Amazon at anything from $30-$50  depending on whether you have a light or not and there don't seem to be any local alternatives. If this is the case obviously better to import with the Kindle to save shipping costs

Is it worth it/necessary to have a cover?

Very useful for protection.
And buy it when you buy the kindle. For some reason or other it's one of those items unavailable if you try and buy it later.

I've had mine for several months and I have never bothered with a cover. Mine either stays next to my bed, or in my flat pouch in my rucksack. Have'nt bothered with a cover cos haven't needed it yet. In fact, I'm thinking the cover will just get in the way when I am reading?

Do you cover your softcover books as well? :D

Dealextreme sells covers that work you out much cheaper even with import duties, just takes a long time to ship to the Post Office ( 4ish weeks ) shipping is free though so can't complain :P

They don't make nasty crunching/cracking noises when dropped or stood on ;) and I have been known to do these things to books

um, a cover is not going to help much anyway even if you drop your kindle or stand on it with the cover on.

The kindle feels very naked without the cover. I bought the non-lighted one with my kindle and it started freezing and doing random reboots, they replaced it and the new one promptly started freezing and rebooting. A google pointed out there was an issue with some of the non-lighted covers shorting the device and causing the symptoms I experienced. I removed the cover and it's not frozen in 2 weeks. I have now replaced the old cover with a lighted and it's bliss.

The current non-lighted one is a supposed to be a different design to the problematic old one, so if you don't want the light get it. Having a lighted one is really really great.

I bought the lighted (lit?) cover with my kindle... love it to bits. The cover makes the kindle easier to hold in certain positions (like lying in bed), and if it is getting in the way, just fold it back. The cover has protected my kindle when I accidentally dropped it.

My wife uses a light cover, but I keep mine without a cover. Its just easier to carry around without a cover.

Ummm, why do you want 3G? Unless you find yourself sitting at the park & suddenly decide you HAVE to immediately purchase the latest novel by whoever, I don't think 3G is all that important.
I don't have a cover, and i'm fine with that, but use it mostly at home, so maybe if you are going to use it outdoors a lot, or for travelling it may be worthwhile to invest in one.
IMO one of the greatest strengths of the kindle is it's light weight & small size, so if the cover compromises that I would not be happy.

I think the Lighted Leather Kindle Cover is horribly overpriced, but I have one for my Kindle and it's real nice.
It just makes the Kindle feel more like an actual book than a piece of hardware.
I can use my Kindle both with or without the cover, but I love holding the Kindle with the leather case in my hand. It's a nice feeling. I haven't used my light much yet, but Hubby uses his light a lot especially at night when I'm asleep and he wants to read. Doesn't disturb me at all.
I like that it protects it - and it makes the Kindle feel more solid. I wouldn't want to stack my Kindle on my bedside table with other books without a cover. Or chuck it into my very busy and full backpack without a cover of some sort.

Hello there,

I recently bought a kindle (wifi) and ordered a cover from this seller on
ebay here -> http://www.ebay.com/itm/280733050387?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_1693wt_1398
It took 5 days to receive the cover from the UK to my SA address via royal mail.
Cost about R65 incl. shipping, no tax, it was marked as gift.
Then I ordered this reading lamp from dealextreme which clamps on the
kindle cover for about R38 again no tax marked as gift. (took about 1 week to arrive)

And yes the cover is surprisingly of high quality considering the low price
and it will protect your kindle.

Oh and definitely go for the wifi+3G version fork out the extra rands its definitely worth it.

Hope this helps you out a bit

Cheers mate
