Official Response: Minister congratulates Vodacom
The Minister of Communications, Dr. Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri wishes to extend her sincere thanks to the incumbent Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Vodacom, Alan Knott-Craig, who retires in September this year after serving Vodacom with distinction for 15 years. I wish to thank Knott-Craig for a job well done and wish him a good health as he begins a new chapter of his fulfilling life.
As the founding CEO of Vodacom, Knott-Craig has demonstrated a visionary leadership over the years that saw Vodacom becoming a leading African mobile network operator with a 55% share of the South African market and successful operations in four other African countries.
His tenacity, business acumen, inspiration, and the talent to build a world-class network have immensely contributed to a better life for millions of South Africans. This re-affirms the role that Information and Communications Technologies can play in socio-economic development. Despite strong competition, Vodacom remained the leader in the SA mobile phone market.

Guess he has made enough of a pocket lining now on the backs of the poor and the ass-raped average man in the street. Good riddance on the one hand, but on the other, who is going to replace him? We run the risk of an even more money-hungry-aim-only-to-please-shareholders type and it will be all downhill for us.

I disagree... you speak as if he invented the thing.
However, let's look at the statement that says without him we would not have had cellphones. If my memory serves me correctly MTN and Vodacom started at more or less the same time, somewhere around 1993. Now, if he hadn't entered the market, then someone else would have, it would have just been a matter of time.

Cell phones were first muted by Alan in 1991. He pushed Telkom into allowing him to run with the idea.
