KODI vs PLEX

..I think you need a PLEX account to link KODI and PLEX.

You don't need anything special, to use your Plex media on Kodi you can either do this via DLNA streaming or by using the PlexBMC add-on. Both completely ruin the Plex experience though as they're not a very elegant solution.

Like I said, it was only out of curiosity to see if I could do it (and I am not an IT guy so mostly just follow guides :) ). I remember you had to enter your PLEX account details in the Android app for it to find your server. So eventually I gave up as we only watch through the Roku or on the PC. Plex just works. If I just pay for the Android app there will be no hassles :)

OK I think I understand the problen here. Some people have more than one TV. I can't imagine the use of a TV in the bedroom. Or watching stuff on anything less than 50"

Not necessarily. My PC is in the study, and we only have one TV in the living room. I used to copy stuff onto a flash disk and watch it through the blu-ray player, but that is a bit of a hassle. Now that I have the Roku, I set up the plex server on my PC and the Roku streams it over the local network. So I don't have to connect my PC to the TV directly or copy media across.

Regardless, the media management of both of these is very nice, now watching my local content is the same as watching Netflix. It remembers where you were, can resume on a different device, downloads artwork and descriptions etc.

I TV in every room is the way to go :p
Agree on the TV size, can't go smaller than 46". 55" is the sweet spot, but bigger is better

This is my setup at home.

HTPC connected to TV in living room. Running Kodi for local use, and it also has Plex media server installed. In my bed room I have a chromecast, and on my phone I have the Plex app. Stream from the Plex server via wifi to the chromecast to watch in the bed room, or whatever room I plug the chromecast into.

Lol. Ye - I have a TV addiction - almost. Got a few dotted around the house (4 in total). But 55" - that is so yesterday. I consume my movies on a 120" 10:9 screen using a 1080p projector - and a Roku/Plex. TV's are cool for casual viewing though

50” is fine if you watch 5 or so pirated episodes a week. I watch TV as a form of time killing, not really entertainment.

My neck ony hurts when I fall off my bike.

The point I am trying to make is that Kodi is fine for everyone that does not believe in compiling their own Linux kernel just because.

Here is how you share libraries in kodi without going the mysql way:
http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Share_libraries_using_UPnP

And here is the android app that lets you control, stream, cache locally etc (full version is about R50) there are othe apps as well:
http://yatse.leetzone.org/

I already have yatse, but I don't want to use my phone to stream anything, since I don't stream. My raspberry pi all run openelec and connect to my file severs with nfs to read the files directly. All decoding happens on the raspberry pi's, the mysql db let's them share scrape info and watched status.

Just a reminder - you don't need Plex. Kodi will remember where you last left whatever you are watching. It has a good Youtube client. It does IPTV very well.

Did I mention you don't need Plex for all that?

This guy... It was not built for the same purpose.

That's the thing!!! There is no purpose for Plex. Really if you have a TV in your bedroom then you are 1) wrong and 2) you can just run Kodi in there as well. And no one watches anything on a tablet or phone. You can't even use them for fapping.

Bit hard to be carrying my 55" TV into the toilet with me every time but for you, I'll give it a go :)

I'm pretty happy that when I go away for the weekend, the latest un-watched episodes of the shows I like are ready on my tablet. And when I get home having watched a few, they are automatically marked as watched on my server and new ones loaded.
