Congrats!

I've been thinking about getting a grip - I see there are some fairly decent ebay jobbies that are identical to the Canon one for about $70 including shipping, takes two batteries, or a pen light adapter thing.
 
I considered a 3rd party one, but I haven't heard/read anything good about any of them, except for the one (can't remember the brand) that's only 10 or so bucks cheaper than Canon's unit.

I must say, it adds a nice bit of chunkyness to it - very nice to hold in portrait mode. But I wouldn't have it on the camera all the time, it's really too bulky, and doesn't fit in my toploader :)
 
Ah - I'm thinking of one for extended periods away, I recon 3x batteries would last a fairly decent amount of time before needing recharging;
 
Three batteries? The Canon grip takes two, and the arm that connects it to the camera goes into the camera's battery bay. So you get to use only two. That said, I've done around 500 shots so far, on my spare battery that's been lying dormant since my 40D got nicked. It's been showing me one bar since I put it in, but it's just not running out of juice! The new battery is charged up and ready to go, but I'm thinking it might be another week before I actually need it!
 
Oh yeah - forgot about that - TWO batteries - my bad.

Yeh, I get a decent amount of life out of one battery.
 
I must say, so far I'm happy. Nothing appears to be *worse* than on the 40D, except the file size :eek: Metering appears a little bit better in the all-round mode. 1600 and 3200 ISO appears to be better, high-ISO NR is definitely better (and it was pretty good in the 40D already). For the rest it's pretty much what I expected. I just miss the 24-105L :(
 
Out of interest, are your files the same size as the ones I sent you? 25-30mb?
 
I haven't checked but I can tell Aperture takes a bit longer to open and render them. I'll check when I'm home (probably only tomorrow).

Uncompressed 14bit raw? My Nikon does not shoot uncompressed raw. It can only shoot 12bit compressed NEF. I wonder what the 14bit uncompressed raw file looks like compared to the 12bit lossy one.

My files are about 10-12MB.
 
No clue - I'll have to check the specs to se if its 14-bit uncompressed...

Dude, what are you shooting? :eek: Are you sure you bought a 50D and not a Hasselblad with a digital back? :p

Looking at the 375 odd pictures I took tonight, my smallest CR2 is 15MB and largest is 22MB. My smallest JPEG (I shoot RAW+JPEG) is 1.6MB and the largest is 8.8MB. My 40D did 10-24MB and 1.5-6MB respectively, so it looks about right.

It's 14 bit compressed. If it was uncompressed it would be in the 60-100MB 30+ MB range for the smallest files. My old Pentax K100D Super shot RAW uncompressed - was about 10-14MB per file for 6MP. You do the math. Converting it to (compressed) DNG took it down to 6-8MB on average.
 
One thing I have to add, is that with the bigger files, the quality/performance of your card reader becomes more important. And I can feel the USB bus' cpu requirements making a difference when I pull a couple of gig off a card. I think I'm going to order the Sandisk FireWire card and see how they compare (I have the non-FW now).
 
KoffieJunkie, did you or are you planning on getting UDMA (300x) CF cards? If so which brands? Contacted the Lexar agents to get me the firewire 800 UDMA reader so my reader will be capable.
 
I've heard that the 50D's jpg is not as good as its raw. Is this true? And if so, is this the reason you guys shoot such big files.

Please explain, KJ. Me confused LOL
