I have noticed that with my local only account i can still update my kubuntu 8.04 and download adons with it too. is the updates local? Thanks :)

Yep, there is a mirror at leg.uct.ac.za and at mirror.ac.za. I don't know if there are other local mirrors.

The local mirrors are fantastic, especially when one is capped :-)

Some of the security updates come via an international mirror, so there are times when an international connection is required. You can check the repositories file if you like.
Code:
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
Code:
...........
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy-security main restricted
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy-security universe
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy-security universe
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy-security multiverse
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy-security multiverse

Its still fine cause it safe to say that at least 80% comes local. I'm so impressed with kubuntu 8.04 Hardy is sooooo good!!! I like it a lot!!! I won't buy another windows cd ever!

Ok I ain't cavedog but............

"Kubuntu 8.04 consists of two different releases, the commercially supported one featuring the stable KDE 3.5.9 desktop and a remix featuring the latest release of KDE 4.0."

Right now I would recommend KDE 3.5.9 as KDE 4, is still very incomplete and not all applications have been ported over to KDE 4

I use the za.archive.ubuntu.com repos, which i assume are local.

But I get tremendously slow downloads from them - in the region of 5000B/s. Does anyone else experience this?

No, I normally get pretty fast download speeds from them:o

i'm pretty sure that if debian has local mirrors for the security packages the same are available for ubuntu,

You buy windows cds? Good grief. <die die die> :D

Although not an official mirror you can try using ftp://ftp.up.ac.za/ as a mirror. I find it a lot faster than the others. Just replace http://domain.co.za with the ftp address above.

Yes Hell never in my life again! I can't beleive I was so foolish! It was luckly not a vista dvd just a xp pro cd so im going to stay with kubuntu :) You have to love kubuntu its soooo cool!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ohh before I forget. Im new to k/ubuntu do I need to worry about virusses and anti virus programs?

Ok just 1 more question. Sorry guys. I have my screen size on 1024x768 I have a 17 inc CRT monitor. But It looks like the refresh rate is low. Like set your refresh rate to 60hz and see. it kinda flashes. I have set it in kubuntu to 85hz that is what my xp has and it was clear but in kubuntu its still flashing like its on 60hz is there a problem or is this normal?

I think I found the problem. i dont have the nvidia drivers installed and im really struggling to get it installed

Im sorry just had enough. I struggled like more than 4 hours and all I achieved was sweet nothing. Still no working nvidia drivers. Christ this just put me right off k/ubuntu forever until they fix this kind of thing to make it easy! Jesus you need to be a rocket scientist to get it working.!
