Even stranger, when the municipality did make a full page announcement (that Goedetrouw is running dry and the only thing we can do now is use water sparingly and wait for rain) in the Zululand Observer, it was placed about four pages from the back. You'd think that would be on the front page. Morons just don't want to take responsibility for not implementing earlier water restrictions.

The Umvoti Water Works extraction point near has all but dried up.

The merciless drought has yet again caused the Umvoti River to dry up, leaving areas in and around Stanger without water.
 
The drought is only part of the issue. Poor maintenance resulting in leaking pipes all over is a major part.

I wonder how much more water would be in Midmar, if Durban wasn't losing 50% & PMB 40% each day to leakages?

RESIDENTS who don’t give a ‘dam’ about the drought will from this month be slammed with huge bills for excessive usage.

On Friday, the City of uMhlathuze implemented Stage 4 drought tariffs and penalties, significantly raising the stakes for water users violating restrictions.

Households exceeding the prescribed 15 kilolitres a month (0.5Kl per day) will now be charged more than double the tariff given to those consuming less.

With two people living in my house we do on average 9-13 kl a month a larger house hold would be unfairly punished with this system feel sorry for the people living there
 
As a family of four, we do about 19kl a month - no gardening, pool topup etc. I had extended family stay with me for a week and that increased to 24kl so there is certainly something to be said about members in a household.

But I did have taps tightened recently so hoping to be around the sub 15kl mark.

Higher rates don't help. My normal usage of about 15 kl cost less than R100, making that double is really not going to make a difference. They should rather implement a fine system. After I installed a rainwater tank for the pool my usage is now about 10 kl a month, but that is only 2 people. They can also look at historic usage and base the fines on that.
 
I wonder what my impression of any town would be if there are no vegetation, trees, gardens and grass.
Place in the desert perhaps.
What would happen to property values.
Soon to find out.
The average drought lasts for seven years.
It will be interesting times to live in.
You cannot hide water shortages like you can with electricity.

Hectic - we are a family of 3 (with a nanny at home all day) and without pool top up and garden (in winter), we use 11kl a month.

THE uMhlathuze Municipality, in light of the worsening drought, has announced serious new water restrictions and increased tariffs – which will especially punish households that use more than the prescribed 15 kilolitres per month.

Restrictions are as follows:
• For urban households, 50% water restrictions will apply between 5am and 7am, and between 9am and 8pm. There will be no water supply between 8pm and 5am.

• For rural households, 50% water restrictions will apply between 4am and 8am; and between 9am and 8pm. There will be no water supply between 8pm and 4am.

• For commercial users, 50% water restrictions will apply between 7am and 10pm. There will be no water supply between 10pm and 6am.

The new tariffs are available on the municipality’s website and will be published in the Zululand Observer Weekender publication.

The fee escalates from R8.54 for daily water consumption of between 0.2 and 0.5 kilolitres a day (R253.50 a month), to R20 for between 0.5 and 1 kilolitre a day (R600).

Tariffs are again bumped up to R26.50 for between 1 and 2 kilolitres a day (R795 a month) and R34.58 for residents using more than 2 kilolitres a day (R1 037,40).
The municipality will establish a household tariff bracket using a computerised formula that breaks down total consumption per month to daily figures.

Commercial users and industries will pay R13.99 for between 0.0 and 0.5 kilolitres per day (R419.70 a month); R20.40 for between 0.5 and 1 kilolitre (R612) and R24 for more than 1 kilolitre a day (R720).

KZN drought causes extended water restrictions

Durban - Water is being rationed to all residents of the iLembe District Municipality on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, with taps now being shut off for 12 hours a day.

This was announced on Tuesday by iLembe mayor Welcome Mdabe.

“This period calls for a change in lifestyle and we urge all residents to continue to use water sparingly,” he said.

Water would now be available between 4am and 10am and 4pm and 10pm.
