A friend of mine keeps complaining about lag, every day his ping ranges from 600-2000... i told him to come on these forums to maybe contact the afrihost rep here or something but he doesnt want to...

so figured id come ask what the issue is since ive gotten alot of help from these forums in troubleshooting my own net problems awhile back.

so the problem is he lags really badly seems like he gets really poor international download speeds. and hes on a 4mbps business account so it shouldnt be the case because from what i understand business lines dont get slowed down at all ever
also http://www.afrihost.com/site/network_status no issues

so i was wondering whats ur guys take on this, sound like a telkom problem or a afrihost problem?

Easiest way to check is to try another ISP. WA have a couple free gigs he can grab to test, before wasting time with support.

its not my line so i cant check just want to get your guys opinion on it sound like a line problem or isp problem?

I use AH capped and uncapped accounts to play games on PS3 and PS4.
Most games don't allow me to see the latency, but afik I don't have lag or serious lag.
I'm not really into FPS atm, but I do occasional play BF3 on PS3 and I don't get reports of lag.
I race a lot and lag is a problem in GT6 and very quickly noticeable and I haven't received any reports of lag.

Will try one of the PS4 free games that is a FPS game.
I think it is hosted in the USA and latency is normally very high (300 - 450ms), but I haven't playe in the last 3 months or so.

With latency that high, I'm pretty sure it won't be ISP related.

Edit:
I assumed your friend was talking about gaming when he referred to lag, but I don't see you mentioning gaming.

How is he experiencing this lag?

yea we play alot of mmo's also LoL and d3... hes always lagging 1k ping +... its abit frustrating, also im trying to help him figure out whats wrong, its abit hard to figure out though because hes 14 and basicly has no clue how to check anything even when i try to explain (im 19 my friends 14 long story but thats what im dealing with).. because his parents want to go over to mweb but i think thats a stupid idea because it sounds like a line problem not an isp problem

Sorry to hear this, cos I can understand that this must suck for your friend's gaming experience.

The best move is always to come through to us, either here on MyBB or via our support centre. We're always willing to help and also help you (or him) through running tests and finding out what could be happening here :(

There is a mayor problem with Afrihost gaming lag.

Various of my fellow gamers and myself are having issues.

When we change to other accounts for testing and so on the lag is missing. ( Tested with WebAfrica ).

This was not always the problem. I think its something to do with Afrihost when they moved over to the MTN backbone.

I receive intermittent lag spikes playing international and on Dota 2 even when playing in South Africa.

They really need to investigate it.

at least 3 of my small online clan has already discontinued there afrihost lines and accounts. I have been the last one holding on because I hope they sort it out soon.

If not soon I will be forced to move too.

Is anyone still having lag issues when using AfriHost for online gaming?

Both a friend of mine on ADSL in Durban North, and Myself on Fibre in Hillcrest, have terrible latency when playing The Division online on PS4. If we both use a Vox account instead, it works perfectly. This has been happening for a couple weeks now.

Anyone else have online gaming latency issues only when using an AfriHost account?

Check out the AH posts for your answer .....
Maybe it would be better to ask who is not having latency issues?

Hi

Shouldn't be any problems around this.
Is it specifically one game that's affected?

Specifically it was The Division which we have both been playing on PS4 of late.

I have stopped playing it as it was unplayable and haven't tried it again since my post. I am currently playing Elder Scrolls Online and also notice characters jumping around the screen a lot. I will need to test this with another account from a different ISP to see if its normal for ESO to have characters lag around, or if its specifically an AfriHost issue.

The final response I got from AfriHost support was "This may mean at the time you are experiencing latency on the Afrihost network, it could very well imply that there are additional users causing the network strain."

Which means I will have to find another ISP if I want to continue my online gaming.

Shouldn't be any overall latency issues from our end.
Does the game have any troubleshooting features you can run through? How's the latency and throughput figures when testing on the PS directly?

When you say not fixed, for who is not fixed? Certain users, or all users? Because im not seeing any issues my side, apart from some issues on my line and the exchange.

I am not aware of any troubleshooting features within the game to test latency.

As I mentioned, my testing was to try a different ISP, at which point I experience NO latency issues. I went back to AfriHost, and experienced issues.

Same goes for the other person I play online with. His game is unplayable via AfriHost connection, and fine with Vox.

This continued for a couple of weeks until I stopped playing The Division because of it.

Before I opened my AfriHost account I was using Vox and experienced no latency issues with them for months of playing The Division.

Doing pings and tracert tests with Afrihost to various servers, everything seems fine. But I cannot test against PSN or Division servers because I don't know their addresses, nor to I think they respond to pings or a tracert (according to online forums), so that wouldn't help me test anyway.

The only feedback I can give you for now is that both my friend and I have latency issues when playing The Division online with PS4 via an AfriHost connection. When we use Vox, we don't experience any issues. I also experience lag on Elder Scrolls Online via Afrihost, but I have not yet tested it on another ISP account.

I will try ESO tonight on a different ISP as well to see if it is any better than AfriHost and let you know.

Thanks for letting me know.
I'm not aware of any trends towards this on our network, but our team can usually help sort out any traffic that may potentially be mis-matched for whatever reason.

Do you have a ticket open with our team?

I do (or did), however the final verdict from AfriHost was "This may mean at the time you are experiencing latency on the Afrihost network, it could very well imply that there are additional users causing the network strain".

The ticket is #EGP-603-83673

I take it from the response I got that they do not know what is causing it, or that their response is accurate and AfriHost network is experiencing strain every evening. Both of which means I'm out of luck and will have to follow suite with the rest of the forum users on here complaining about AfriHost and jump ship. I'd prefer not to as I have been very happy with AfriHost and would prefer that hey fix the issue.

To be fair to AfriHost however, I will first test a few more games online in comparison to another ISP to see if the latency issue persists before jumping ship.

Just chatted to a friend who is on Afrihost and asked if he experiences latency issues when playing online gaming. His response: "Ye big time. I'm going to change ISP. Over them to be honest".

More motivation for AfriHost to investigate and fix, as more and more users will just jump ship.
