Cape Town - Legendary American cyclist Lance Armstrong's first visit to Cape Town started off on a sour note on Monday night because of bureaucratic red tape.

On Monday at about 21:00 Armstrong wrote on Twitter that he'd landed at the Cape Town International Airport but was refused entry to the country because his passport was full.

It's Armstrong's first visit to the Mother City. He will be taking part in the Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay cycle tour on Sunday.

"My passport's full and there's no space for another stamp. So ... I'm stranded," he tweeted.

Fortunately a short while later, Armstrong tweeted that he had finally been allowed to enter South Africa.

"It's not the friendliest welcome I've ever had, but we've all come across immigration officials like this."

Siobhan McCarthy, chief director of communication at home affairs, said visitors travelling to South Africa need to have at least two blank pages in their passport in order to be allowed entry to the country.

"Airlines are supposed to check people's passports before they leave for another country."

When asked what would happen if a person didn't have the required blank pages in their passport, McCarthy said that person would be refused entry to the country and would have to return to the country they came from.

She couldn't comment on Armstrong's case and said the procedure for celebrities entering the country might be different.

450,000 WC visitors - make sure you have enough space for another rubber stamp.

Obviously not common sense if Armstrong didnt think of it. I mean he travels weekly? The departure airport is meant to check prior to you boarding the plane.

Exactly.

Why is it our fault if he arrives with no passport space?

SA gets nailed for poor passport control, and then when we do the right thing, we get nailed too.
Send him back, and let him arrive with a new passport.

I'm sure one of two things happened. Home Affairs warded off a major PR disaster by waiving the rules or the US Consulate staff hightailed it to the airport with extra passport pages.

Glad to see they are doing their job. I think this may have to do with the 40000+ hookers arriving any day now :D. They have been told to be very strict and look out for dodgy people :D. Not that lance is dodgy.

Sure - the airline is supposed to check but at the end of the day the responsibility lies with the passport holder. I have little doubt that he was well aware of this SOP but, for whatever reason (probably time), decided to take a chance because hey, he's Lance Armstrong.

I think his mentality is.. I am Lance Armstrong make a plan!!

Yeah, and apparently his tweet on twitter wasn't too complementary about SA

Guess he's either got a crappy PA or he feels he has a god-like aura about him. Why wasn't that tweeted abroad! :(

I agree, it is just plain stupid trying to enter a country with a passport that has no free pages for entry/departing stamps. tsk tsk. What counts for us, should count for him. Go back and get a new passport and try again!

Interesting posts.

I notice that none suggested that our entry points are geared to assist the 450000 visitors who we are expecting to arrive on our shores in order to spend their daily allowance of $200 a day.

It has also been stated by a government spokesperson that the event won't pay for itself, but that the profit will be made from returning visitors and their contacts. I doubt that anyone turned back because of some administrative policeman will even bother to return for the WC, never mind recommend RSA to their friends.

He's got balls entering a country without space for a stamp..

Do you think Germany would have let a South African into their country with a passport with no free pages for stamps etc? I think not. Why should we? Yes, the more the better for the economy, but the rules when it comes to international travel still applies.

He doesn't do anything with the documents etc, I'm sure he has people who do this and someone messed up.
Good on SA for trying to do things properly.

It's a standard requirement to have open pages in your passport. This story is "Arrogant sportsman or his flunkies mess up".
