Hi SEF

Can you explain your fair usage policy? I can't seem to find it on your site just a reference to it but not the actual document. Also, it would be nice if you did not force the user to use you for line rental

FUP Unshaped Uncapped ADSL

If your average bandwidth usage is double than all the other clients on the same package during anytime of the month, shaping would be applied to your account.

@ tr1ple6 The fup is located at http://orbisp.co.za/aup.htm. Regarding the inclusion of the line rental, this is a one price package which requires us to maintain the ADSL line. In this way we are able to trouble shoot any issues regarding it instead of being on hold for 10-20mins to speak to a tech, also this helps us provide a lower cost to our customers.

@ Vakis, thanks. That has to be the vaguest FUP ever. There is also some pretty big downside to this policy: What if loads of people are not even using their accounts on that day, surely you will be double the average without even trying? Also, how long will the 'shaping' last for and how much shaping will there be?

@ Orb ISP, your explanation of the line rental seems fair on the surface but remember that people here are more savvy than the average Joe and we can see that it is a poor attempt to lock the client into only using you as an ISP. In fact, I would be willing to pay 10-20% more for just the data sans the line rental and the quite frankly extortionate setup fee. You will have me and many more clients if you fix these factors along with a definitive FUP that states exactly what you mean by shaping, how long the user will be shaped for and exactly how much data used is a violation of the FUP (an exact number and not some vague 'double of others' policy)

@tr1ple6 Thank you for your comments and input. Please clarify which setup fee you are referring to.
In regards to the amount downloadable before being shaped, this can not be a defined amount, as this will vary from month to month.
As for locking clients to our services, once the line is transfered to Orb ISP you are still able to use any alternate ISP as well, we do not restrict you to only use our accounts in any way.

If you have further questions please feel free to email me. [email protected]

As I've previously mentioned on another forum, OrbISP is one of our resellers. Meaning, their bandwidth and shaping policy is exactly the same as to ours.

Our Fair Use Policy is straight forward - if your average usage is more than the average usage of all the other users on the same package, in a 3 month period, shaping will be applied.

Of course we are also looking at the bandwidth usage history of each uncapped account before shaping is applied.

It's important to note than unlike ISPs who uses IS bandwidth, we don't lower your actual account speed (you are welcome to confirm this with a speed test) - instead we only apply shaping to commonly "abused" protocols such as p2p, ftp etc. Once shaping is applied to your account, it won't be lifted.

We've provided IS bandwidth in the past - their shaping policy is a nightmare. Not only do they apply extreme shaping, they also lower your account speed (equivalent speed of old dial-up in some cases). Due to this reason we've decided to end our business relationship with them as it's unfair towards a client to pay for a 4Mb account and only getting speeds which are similar to dial-up / grps. Our uncapped offerings are now provisioned on the Cybersmart backbone and I can assure you that you'll get value for your money.

Also note that you are in no way locked-in when transferring your adsl line to us, you can still use other ISPs. By transferring your adsl line to us, enables us to give you better service and support should a problem arise. Should you decide to cancel, your line is transferred back to Telkom.

And for the record, the Terms & Conditions of Cybersmart is not applicable to us or any of our offerings. Our Terms & Conditions apply.

Could someone please shed some light on this. Orb Isp sells unshaped uncapped account with a fair use policy for. 384k R399, 512k R699 and 10mbps @ R999. Yet from Trltech unshaped uncapped account with fair use policy cost 384k R649, 512k R1229 and 10mbps R2329.

It only makes sense to me when I take the prices for shaped uncapped account with fair use policy from Trltech. Then Orb Isp prices is R50 for 384k and R100 for 512k and 10bmps per month more.

Sorry if I am the only one that the above doesn't make sense to. But could either or both of Trltech and Orb Isp please explain why the reseller is so much cheaper for the unshaped account.

@Clickme The unshaped products are an introductory offer, although we are a reseller of TRlTech our pricing is completely different and independent.
